DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, event promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s and developed his knowledge through vinyl, cassettes, CDs and later digital formats. His wider musical background spans House, Techno, Drum and Bass and Chillout, giving his radio work a broad foundation across several generations of electronic music.
During his teenage years, Joshua became closely involved with Portugal’s developing underground scene through DJing, record collecting, radio and events organised with friends and fellow enthusiasts. Those experiences placed him close to the growth of rave culture in the country and helped establish the musical curiosity that still shapes his selections today.
After stepping away from regular activity to concentrate on family life, Joshua eventually returned to DJing and broadcasting through Floating Beats. The programme became an outlet for deeper, progressive and underground electronic music, with careful pacing and gradual movement replacing the need for constant peak-time pressure.
Velvety Elements developed as a complementary series focused more closely on the warmer and more soulful side of House Music. Deep House, Soulful House and groove-led material sit at the centre of the programme, giving Joshua a separate space for the part of his collection built around warmth, subtle rhythm and longer musical flow.
Alongside radio, Joshua has become increasingly active as a producer through several aliases. Each name gives him room to explore a different area of electronic music without forcing every release into one musical identity.
As Joshua Fernand, he concentrates primarily on contemporary Techno. Releases including Blue River on MixCult Digital and Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal through his own JFLM Recordings reflect a tougher and more rhythm-focused side of his studio work.
The same alias also moves into deeper and more hypnotic territory through tracks such as Closed Door and Open Door on Radickal Records. Killer’s Plan on Rice Bowl Recordings extends the project towards Melodic House and Techno, creating a bridge between his harder productions and the more atmospheric side of his radio selections.
Joshua Marian carries much of his House-focused work and reflects the warmer character heard through Velvety Elements. Releases including Soul Zone and Love My Soul on Bassment Tapes, Tengo Rojo and Restless Lips on 659 Records, together with Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See on 14th Level Of Paradise, explore deeper and more soulful House directions.
His K Joshua alias moves further into hypnotic and experimental electronic music. Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm explore Dub Techno, Ambient and deeper rhythmic structures, giving this project a more spacious and abstract character.
Joshua also founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his own productions and collaborative projects. The label gives him greater control over how new material is released while providing a dedicated home for music that moves between the different sides of his studio work.
That production activity now feeds directly back into his radio programmes. Floating Beats gives Joshua room for deeper, progressive and hypnotic electronic music, while Velvety Elements concentrates on House through warmer grooves, soulful textures and understated movement.
Together, the two programmes reflect the same broad musical curiosity that has followed Joshua from his early years collecting records in Portugal into his current work as a DJ, producer and label owner. Rather than treating House, Techno and experimental electronic music as separate worlds, he uses each project to explore a different part of a wider underground musical identity.
DJ Joshua opens Floating Beats 464 with Mosca and MODEON before Ray Kajioka and Yotam Avni bring the first hour firmly into Techno territory. Frank Wiedemann's "Themroc" adds a darker, more spacious edge before Gel Abril tightens the groove with "Provocateur".
Assailants, the collaboration between Ben Sims and Truncate, push the set into a tougher rhythmic phase with "Effort 7", while Ryan Elliott keeps the pressure controlled on "Snake Charmer". Deetron's "Believer" then introduces a more soulful and melodic shade without losing the drive that has built through the middle of the hour.
Mark Broom's remix of Kirk Degiorgio returns the focus to a firmer techno pulse before Robert Babicz and Sterac's stripped remix of G Flame bring Floating Beats 464 to a darker conclusion. The first hour moves between driving, hypnotic and melodic forms of Techno, with DJ Joshua using changes in texture rather than dramatic stylistic breaks to shape the progression.
Velvety Elements 036 begins with Marc Brauner and Evren Furtuna, immediately changing the atmosphere towards warmer Deep House and a more relaxed rhythmic swing. Vincent Casanova and Sandile deepen that direction before Jovonn's "Inside" brings a classic house sensibility into the centre of the second hour.
Purple Ice and DJOKO keep the groove understated before Platzdasch and Dix, Secnd and Bamo move the set towards the tighter pulse of Deep Tech House. The progression remains subtle, with stripped percussion and rolling basslines connecting the deeper material to the more club-focused middle section.
Toshi and Timmy Regisford bring a stronger soulful character with "Kiqi", followed by Natasha Watts' "Everything" in Louie Vega's instrumental version to close the programme. Across the two shows, DJ Joshua contrasts the techno-driven intensity of Floating Beats with the warm Deep House, deeper tech grooves and Soulful House character of Velvety Elements.
