Velvety Elements 331 welcomes back DJ Joshua for another edition of his long-running show on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across the region and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s and developed his musical outlook through vinyl, cassettes, CDs and later digital formats. House Music has remained central to that development even as his wider interests have extended into Techno, Drum and Bass, Chillout and other areas of electronic music.
That long-standing connection shapes the identity of Velvety Elements, where Joshua focuses on the warmer and more soulful side of his collection. His programming favours smooth pacing, subtle rhythmic movement and a measured approach that gives each selection room to develop.
Joshua remained connected with Portugal’s underground scene through event promotion, collaboration and support for other local artists. After stepping away from regular musical activity to concentrate on family life, he later returned through Floating Beats and rebuilt his presence in radio.
Velvety Elements developed from that same creative period while giving the softer side of his musical identity a dedicated platform. The programme has since become a regular outlet for selections built around groove, depth and continuity.
His recent studio work under the Joshua Marian name reflects much of that direction. Soul Zone and Love My Soul on Bassment Tapes, together with Tengo Rojo and Restless Lips on 659 Records, form part of a catalogue centred on warmer rhythms and soulful detail.
How to Play Guitar on JFLM Recordings takes a more melodic route, while Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See on 14th Level Of Paradise continue the deeper side of his production work. These releases show how Joshua Marian gives him a distinct space for material connected with the character of Velvety Elements.
Joshua also records as K Joshua, using the alias for more hypnotic, spacious and experimental ideas. Releases including Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm give that project a noticeably different identity from his warmer studio material.
Working under several aliases allows Joshua to separate contrasting ideas without forcing everything into one production style. Joshua Marian carries much of the groove-led material, while K Joshua provides room for darker and more abstract electronic influences.
In 2024, Joshua launched JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his own productions and collaborative work. The label gives him greater control over how new material is presented while providing a dedicated platform for his continuing studio activity.
That production work feeds naturally back into his radio programmes and broadens the perspective he brings to each edition. Velvety Elements 331 continues the series with another carefully selected session shaped by Joshua’s long-standing connection with House Music and his decades of experience as a DJ, producer and broadcaster.
DJ Joshua opens Velvety Elements 331 with Mic Newman and Garry Todd, bringing in a warm Deep House foundation through Tom Craven and James Cotterill's Illusion Remix. Steve Lawler then shifts the set towards Tech House with "Hoffman's Potion", establishing the more percussive direction that dominates much of the episode.
Anil Chawla, Rampa with Re.You and Ross Evana continue that Tech House run, keeping the groove stripped back, rhythmic and firmly club-focused. ONNO's remix of "The Track" sits comfortably within that progression before Daniel Dubb briefly returns the mix to deeper house territory with "Four Chords Deep".
Yousef's Circus Rework of Leroy with Yost Koen pushes the set back into Tech House before Jay Tripwire adds another deeper cut with "Rawlord". Ahmet Sisman then restores the percussive pressure, linking the deeper middle section with the harder final stretch.
Italoboyz introduce the episode's only clear Techno selection through Luna City Express' remix of "Digger Bick". Einzelkind and Jose M. with TacoMan then bring the programme back into Tech House, closing the set with a direct and tightly controlled club groove.
Across Episode 331, DJ Joshua balances a predominantly Tech House selection with carefully placed Deep House tracks and a brief Techno diversion. The result is a focused session built around rolling percussion, stripped-back house rhythms and deeper low-slung grooves rather than large stylistic swings.
