Scientific Sound Asia presents a new edition of Velvety Elements, hosted by Portuguese DJ and producer Joshua. Staying true to the station’s mission of connecting underground artists across Asia and beyond, the series continues to highlight house music shaped by soul, groove and emotional depth.

Based in Évora, Portugal, Joshua has been immersed in electronic music culture since the 1990s. His extensive archive of vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital releases reflects decades of dedication to the underground. While his journey has explored techno, drum and bass and chillout, house music has always remained central to his artistic identity.

During quieter periods for Portugal’s underground scene, Joshua played an active role in sustaining it, organising events and encouraging collaboration between DJs and producers. After stepping away to focus on family life, he returned with renewed clarity, launching Floating Beats, known for its melodic and forward-thinking direction, followed by Velvety Elements, a series devoted to deeper, warmer and more soulful strands of house.

Working under several aliases including K Joshua, Joshua Marian, Joshua Fernand and Joshua Onairam, he continues to explore multiple creative perspectives. Each project reflects a distinct facet of his sound, ranging from rhythm-focused minimalism to emotionally driven melodic expression. In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings, a label created to release his own productions while supporting underground artists who value authenticity, depth and musical identity.

Joshua’s recent output highlights a period of strong artistic momentum. Under the Joshua Marian name, his 2024 Nobody Waiting For Me EP on Back to the Beat delivered the organ-led title track alongside the nostalgic tones of I Love You, both rooted firmly in classic house traditions.

Follow-up releases such as Just Love and Chance With Soul expanded this palette further, blending groove with emotional nuance. In 2025, his K Joshua single Light of Faith introduced a more introspective approach, pairing deep house rhythms with melodic phrasing that balances reflection and forward motion.

Through Velvety Elements, Joshua continues to articulate the essence of his musical vision. Each episode unfolds as a warm, flowing journey, weaving rhythm and harmony into an experience that honours the enduring soul of house music.

Velvety Elements 297 opens with a deep and atmospheric tone as Limbs of a Lion sets a spacious Deep House foundation. That mood continues through The Crust Song and Neverland, where warm basslines and subtle rhythmic detail establish a patient and immersive opening stretch.

Minimal and Deep Tech textures come into play with Raptures of The Deep and Two on The Terrace, tightening the groove while maintaining a restrained and hypnotic feel. These selections add focus and forward motion without disrupting the laid-back character of the mix.

As the session unfolds, the emphasis shifts toward classic House energy. Tracks like A Groove Thing, Discoteca and Back With The Rest introduce soulful swing and familiar club rhythms, bridging deep-rooted house traditions with contemporary production.

The closing section leans into funkier and more upbeat territory, where Betta House brings a Jackin House bounce before the episode settles back into groove-led House to finish. Velvety Elements 297 closes as a cohesive and elegant journey, balancing depth, rhythm and timeless house sensibility throughout.

Don’t miss his live radio show on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. Indochina Time (ICT). If you can’t catch it live, the replay will be available on Friday from 6 to 8 a.m. (ICT).
