Acid house emerged from Chicago's house music scene during the mid-1980s, built on programmed drum rhythms and the distinctive bass sound of the Roland TB-303. Black Chicago producers took an overlooked electronic instrument and turned it into the foundation of an entirely new form of dance music.
Phuture, formed by DJ Pierre, Earl "Spanky" Smith Jr. and Herbert "Herb J" Jackson, played a central role in establishing the genre. Their track "Acid Tracks" came from adjusting the TB-303's frequency, resonance and envelope controls live while its bass pattern played.
Chicago DJ Ron Hardy introduced the recording to dancers at the Music Box, reportedly playing it several times in one night. The club response was strong enough that Phuture released the track through Trax Records in 1987, with Marshall Jefferson assisting on production.
Acid house spread beyond Chicago through imported records, DJs and clubs across Britain and continental Europe. It became central to the UK's Second Summer of Love in 1988, when clubs, warehouse parties and outdoor raves brought electronic dance music to a much wider audience.
The genre went on to shape techno, trance, breakbeat, hardcore and later rave styles, while staying connected to Chicago house at its root. Its defining sound remains the squelching TB-303 bassline, repetitive rhythm, and gradual change built from live manipulation of the equipment.
At Scientific Sound Asia, acid house occasionally surfaces within Ministry Of Breaks, Electronic Roots and Foundations.
