Event Details

After an unforgettable run as a radio series on Scientific Sound Asia and two successful live editions, Bicycle Corporation and Scientific Sound Asia returned to HAKU Taipei for the third edition of Roots. The night continued the series with Afrobeat, Nu Disco, Disco and Disco Re-Edits, carrying the warm and groove-led character of the radio programme back onto a Taipei dancefloor.

The third edition kept the musical identity established by the first two events rather than changing direction. Marco Mei and Murphy Kin returned with selections built around rhythm, classic dance music influences and records capable of moving freely between older Disco traditions and contemporary club production.

Bringing the programme into HAKU Taipei allowed the radio concept to develop in front of a physical audience. The club editions gave Marco Mei and Murphy Kin the freedom to build longer selections, respond directly to the room and connect records that might otherwise have appeared separately within a broadcast.

マルコは、プロデューサーのステファノ・ウグリアーノ（通称6884）とともにBicycle Corporationのもう一方のメンバーでもあります。この制作プロジェクトではHouseやTechnoを手がけてきましたが、マルコ自身のDJセットはDeep House、Disco House、Nu Disco、Tech Houseに加え、グルーヴ重視のダンスミュージックというはるかに広範なジャンルにまで及びます。

That breadth was central to the idea behind Roots. The event allowed Marco to move away from a rigid peak-time club formula and instead draw connections between Disco, Afro-influenced rhythms, House and contemporary reworks of older music.

ディスコ・リエディットは、既存の録音を基にアレンジを変更することで、DJや現代のダンスフロア向けに新たな層を加えました。拡張されたイントロ、長めのインストゥルメンタルパート、再構成されたブレイクなどにより、古い楽曲にも原曲を記憶に残るものとした個性を損なうことなく、新たな機能性を与えることができました。

アフロビートは、番組に異なるリズムの伝統をもたらし、探求される音楽的ルーツの幅を広げました。繰り返されるグルーヴ、重層的なパーカッション、そして生演奏による楽器が、それらのレコードをファンクやディスコ、ハウスと自然に並べる一方で、セレクターたちに夜を彩る新たな道筋を提供しました。

マルコは国際的なDJとしての経験を通じて、音楽文化間のこうした移行に特に慣れ親しんでいました。異なるジャンルを孤立したセクションとして提示するのではなく、彼のセットでは、あるレコードから次のレコードへと、共通のリズムや楽器編成、雰囲気が自然に受け継がれていくことがありました。

Murphy KinはMarcoとともに再び登場し、第3回目のイベントにもう一つの極めて多様なレコードコレクションを持ち込みました。Taipei-based DJであり、キュレーター、レーベル関係者でもある彼は、地域全体にわたるハウスやディスコ、そしてインディペンデントなクラブ文化と長年にわたり深い関係を築いてきました。

Originally from Shanghai and later based in Taipei, Murphy became involved with bars, clubs, independent parties and music curation across both cities. His background made him particularly well suited to Roots, where knowledge of different styles mattered more than strict allegiance to one genre.

マーフィー・キンは、DJ Lucyとしても知られており、Ting Ting Discoプロジェクトと関わりを持つようになりました。その活動を通じて、ディスコを中心としたイベントや、台北、上海をはじめとするアジアの各都市におけるナイトライフの広範なネットワークとのつながりを築きました。

その柔軟性により、マーフィーは古いディスコの音源からハウスやアフロ系のグルーヴへと無理なく移行することができました。現代的なリエディット作品も、オリジナルレコードと並びながら、依然として同じ音楽的対話の一環であるかのように聴こえるのです。

マルコとのパートナーシップが成功したのは、二人のセレクターが十分な音楽的共通点を共有していたためで、異なるバックグラウンドからアプローチしながらも、連続性を保つことができたからです。両者ともディスコとハウスを深く理解していましたが、それぞれのコレクションや影響の違いにより、その夜が予測可能になることはありませんでした。

By the third edition, that relationship had become part of the identity of Roots. Audiences returning to HAKU could expect Marco Mei and Murphy Kin rather than a constantly changing guest format, allowing the event to build familiarity around the selectors themselves.

定期的なパートナーシップは、台北とScientific Sound Asiaの広範なアジアネットワークとのつながりも強化しました。Bicycle Corporationに連なるラジオ番組は、国際的に放送する組織とつながりを保ちながら、台湾で定期的なクラブイベントへと発展することも可能です。

音楽自体は、主流の商業番組へと傾くことなく、あえてポジティブで親しみやすいスタイルを維持しました。温かみのあるベースライン、打楽器、ソウルフルなボーカル、そして馴染み深いディスコの構成が、ダンスフロアを盛り上げながらも、より深みのある選曲や、一見すると分かりにくい選曲にも対応できる余地を残していました。

Afrobeatはまた、このイベントが単にヨーロッパおよびAmerican Discoの祝祭にとどまらないようにしました。そのリズミカルな影響により、プログラムはダンスミュージック史のもう一つの重要な流れへと広がり、アフリカのグルーヴ、ファンク、そして後のクラブ・プロダクションとの関係性を浮き彫りにしました。

Nu Disco and contemporary edits then brought those older influences into a modern DJ context. The combination meant Roots could acknowledge history without functioning as a retrospective or nostalgia night.

「クールに、セクシーに着こなして、踊って、自由に感じてください」という主催者からの呼びかけは、そのシンプルで気負わないアプローチを端的に表していました。このイベントは、厳格なドレスコードやアンダーグラウンドな真剣さ、あるいは技術的なデモンストレーションを重視したものではなく、豊かなコレクションを持つセレクターと、思い切り体を動かしたいという人々の輪を中心に据えたものでした。

Bicycle Corporation’s involvement also gave Roots a distinct place among its other projects. The series showed another side of Marco Mei’s musical identity and allowed the broader influences behind his House and electronic music work to come into clearer focus.

Scientific Sound Asia continues to connect that history through its current events, radio station, DJ agency and music news sections. The Taipei editions of Roots demonstrate how the organisation’s activity extended beyond broadcasting into physical events elsewhere in Asia.

Marco Mei’s continuing relationship with Scientific Sound Asia also provides a direct connection between these events and the platform today. His DJ agency profile documents the international career that sits behind his long-running radio and event activity with Bicycle Corporation.

Murphy Kin likewise became a recurring part of Bicycle Corporation’s Roots programming rather than appearing only for the HAKU events. His involvement strengthened the relationship between Taipei’s club culture and the international listeners following the radio series.

By its third edition, Roots had therefore developed into a recognisable format rather than simply repeating a successful first party. Marco Mei and Murphy Kin returned to HAKU Taipei with Afrobeat, Nu Disco, Disco and Disco Re-Edits, keeping the emphasis on warm rhythms, musical freedom and a dancefloor driven by groove.

第3回目も、シリーズ開始当初から掲げられてきたシンプルな理念を踏襲しました。クールに着こなす、セクシーに装う、踊りながら自由な気分で——これらは、クラシックな影響と現代的な選曲が、経験豊かな2人のDJと、現代クラブカルチャーの背後にある共通の音楽的ルーツを通じて交差する一夜へと誘う、まさにふさわしい呼びかけでした。
