DJ Joshua shares the track lists for his weekly Floating Beats and Velvety Elements programmes on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, identified in this article as Joshua Mar, is a Portuguese electronic music enthusiast whose extensive music library informs his work as a DJ. Growing up in Évora, he developed an early interest in collecting electronic music and explored House, Drum and Bass, Chill-out and Techno, with Techno at the forefront of his interests.
Like many teenagers of the early 1990s, he learned to DJ, became a vinyl digger and experienced the emergence of rave music and culture through local radio. He played a range of electronic music on air and at events organised with friends and fellow ravers.
As his electronic obsession grew, Portugal's rave scene began to find an audience and he recognised the need for a local media presence for electronic music. He supported ravers in his community by bringing those developing sounds to local airwaves.
After the birth of his first child, Joshua took time away from DJing to focus on fatherhood. When his child was older, he returned to music and established a new radio show, from which Floating Beats emerged.
Floating Beats and Velvety Elements are carried by online radio stations internationally. Joshua describes the format in his own words: 'Music is an art form. Is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a place where you hear sounds that can float and end up falling onto your body, enjoy it'.
In his weekly programmes, Joshua presents House and Techno in deep, tech, melodic, Detroit, soulful, progressive and vocal forms, including melodic Techno. The two shows draw on the range of electronic music that has informed his DJing since his youth.
Floating Beats opens with Argy's Love Dose in the Audiofly remix on Poker Flat Recordings, before Ejeca's Kolide on Dance Trax introduces Peak Time Techno. Cossway's Vertigo and Squal G's X Form in the Laurent Maldo featuring Mike Anderson remix hold the early momentum before Federico Grazzini's Yellow on Snatch! Records brings in Tech House.
Harrison BDP's Sound Expansion Meditation on Shall Not Fade gives the first hour a Deep Tech House focus, while FJAAK's Breath on FJAAK shifts the rhythm towards House Music. Bryan Zentz's D-Clash precedes ADMN's Technology is Creepy on Infolines, which introduces the first Deep House passage.
Romain Richard's Twisting My Mind on Urban Kickz Recordings and Mladen Tomic's Turn Left on Trapez return Floating Beats to Peak Time Techno. Biz's Psychotropic in the Hannes Bieger remix on Tronic closes this section with Melodic House and Techno.
The final part of Floating Beats moves from the direct club pressure of Romain Richard and Mladen Tomic towards the more melodic structure of Biz's remix. That change gives the first programme a measured finish without losing its electronic focus.
Velvety Elements begins with Matthieu Faubourg's Please, Stay on STRCTR and Ritz's Should on Piston Recordings, both rooted in Deep House. ARTWORK featuring Dearson's instrumental Love Is Real follows, extending the warmer mid-set direction.
Dave Samuel's Revamp on Habits Records adds a Deep Tech House edge before Accatone's Swing That on Piston Recordings returns to Deep House. The pairing moves the second programme between reduced rhythms and a more rounded House groove.
Daniel Steinberg's Velocity on Arms & Legs brings House Music back into view, followed by DJ Steaw's This Kind of Music on Rutilance Recordings. Their sequence keeps the programme focused on the connection between fuller House rhythms and deeper club music.
WORKER UNION's Sugar Grove on High SeVen Records leads into Oscar Barila's Just Mike on Delve Deeper Recordings, SY's Release, and Tojami Sessions' Feel Love on Plastic City. Jovonn closes Velvety Elements with Pianos of Gold in the Ian Pooley mix on Clone Royal Oak, ending the programme with House Music.
