DJ Joshua presents the track lists for his Floating Beats and Velvety Elements programmes on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, whose real name is Joshua Mar, is a Portuguese electronic music connoisseur whose extensive library informs his work as a disc jockey. Growing up in Évora, he developed an interest in collecting electronic music and explored House, Drum and Bass, Chillout and Techno, with Techno becoming a central fascination.
Like many teenagers in the early 1990s, he learned to DJ, became a vinyl digger and shared the birth of rave music and culture through local radio shows. As his electronic obsession grew, Portugal’s rave scene began to develop and he recognised the need for local media representation of its electronic music.
He also played at events organised with friends and fellow ravers, working across the electronic styles heard on those local radio programmes. Shortly after the birth of his first child, he took time away from DJing to focus on fatherhood.
When his child was older, Joshua returned to music and began a new radio show, from which Floating Beats was born. Floating Beats and Velvety Elements are broadcast by a number of online radio stations around the world.
Joshua describes the programme in his own words: 'Music is an art form. Is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a place where you hear sounds that can float and end up falling onto your body, enjoy it'.
Across his weekly programmes, Joshua presents House Music and Techno in deep, tech, melodic, Detroit, soulful, progressive and vocal forms. The selection also includes melodic Techno alongside the broader Techno direction of Floating Beats.
Floating Beats opens with Subground 3000’s Expecting on Re:vibe Audio, establishing a Peak Time Techno focus. Fred H’s Waves on FJT Production introduces a brief dance music contrast before Jon Hester’s Onward returns to the Transmat label’s direct techno approach.
Kosh’s 1-800-ARP on Convergence brings in Deep Tech House, while A Sagittariun’s Arc Of Enlightenment on Kneaded Pains raises the pressure again. Biz’s Set Me Free follows on Transmat without forcing an unconfirmed genre classification onto the record.
Planetary Assault Systems’ Shine on Token moves the first hour towards raw, deep and hypnotic Techno. Floorplan’s On The Case on M-Plant keeps that stripped-back character in place, with a firm rhythmic emphasis.
Hybrasil’s Megalith on RSPX and Rob Strobe’s Optimal Power Flow on Motech Records hold the reduced techno line through the middle of Floating Beats. Taran & Lomov’s Back Door on Ovum Recordings leads into S-File’s Digital Disorder on GND Records, closing the programme’s techno-focused hour.
Velvety Elements begins with Davyd M.’s You Make Me Feel on Kaizoku Beats Recordings, bringing a House Music foundation to the second programme. ColorJaxx follows with Life on the Outside on House Cookin Records, introducing the warmer Deep House direction.
Fred Everything’s Imagination & Determination on Champion Records extends that deep-house feel with a measured club groove. Soulthek’s Luis Bravo Afterhours remix of Years After on Piston Recordings then brings the selection back towards Deep Tech House.
Piem and Richard Ulh’s Other Things, featuring Mizbee, appears on Whoyostro and keeps the second hour in deep-tech territory. Andrew Azara’s Resolution on Heavy House Society follows with another restrained house cut.
Franck Roger’s What About Fun on Real Tone Records restores the deeper House Music thread before Kerouac & Smile’s Juliche Hernandez remix of It’s Mine on Sustain shifts the rhythm back towards Deep Tech House. Local Options’ All We Have Is Now on Large Music and Jerome Sydenham and Fatima Njai’s Krimson Blossom on Kraftmatic Records give Velvety Elements a deep-house finish.
