Scientific Sound Asia presents DJ Marco Mei and his 2021 Podcast 40, episode 40 of the series. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Marco Mei is an Italian DJ and producer whose career spans more than thirty years, with early influences including afrobeat and synthesised music. Those influences led him to the decks in Italy during the early 1990s and have informed his selections throughout each stage of his career.
A residency at Pacha Club in Sharm el-Sheikh helped take Marco's work to an international audience. It was followed by appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk, alongside appearances with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void.
In 2009, he formed Bicycle Corporation with Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884, building a catalogue of more than fifty tracks and remixes for 17:44 Records, Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox. The duo's Hard Techno remix of Virus D.D.D's Origination, released in August, is among their more discussed recent releases.
Based in Taipei, Marco works across a wider South East Asian network built through regular regional appearances. He shares updates through Facebook, is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency and broadcasts weekly through its radio station.
Themba's Ashamed, featuring Brenden Praise in The Martinez Brothers Remix, opens with a warm, rhythmically focused feel. Manyelo Dafro and Bassekou Kouyate follow with Ladon in Da Capo's Touch on Herbal 3 Records, where Kouyate's ngoni contribution brings a distinct West African musical character.
Lanowa's Mojito in the Ourra and Gary B Remix on Citizens Of Vice introduces an Electronica shade before COEO's Vojager on Toy Tonics settles into House Music. Disclosure's Observer Effect on K7 Records precedes Nic Fanciulli and Retna's This Is Life on Toolroom, which supplies the programme's Afro House entry. Jamie Jones's Handy Work on Hot Creations and Eats Everything's Hello Bitch on Pets Recordings establish a firmer Tech House section before DJ Deeon's Bak The Fuck Up on Ghetto Rhythm Composers sharpens its Chicago reference.
Montel's Protection on Montel Records keeps the central section direct, followed by Amarcord and E.S.O's The Blue Hour Club in the Echonomist Remix. Theus Mago's Papaya Vieja on Optimo Music Digital Danceforce provides a more atmospheric electronic diversion, and Harry Romero's Jack Yo Body on Bambossa Recordings restores the house-led momentum.
Riva Starr and Gavin Holligan's The Feeling in the Deetron Remix leads into Shamako's Show Me How on Raw Materials Records. Mateo and Matos's Release The Rhythm on Glasgow Underground then returns to Deep House, placing a New York-rooted club reference late in the selection.
Logic1000's What You Like, featuring Yunè Pinku and released on Therapy, leads towards Keinemusik's Saving My Love, featuring Little Dragon, with the latter bringing Melodic House and Techno warmth. Jazz n' Palms closes episode 40 with Van Van, a Jazz finish that gives the final record a different texture from the preceding club material.
