Berlin/UK DJ duo Many Hands present episode 43 of Basement Soul on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the collaboration of DJs Jona J and Kava, who bring together distinctive musical backgrounds and decades of experience. Jona Jefferies, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, began DJing in the early 1990s within the free party and rave scenes of southwest England.
His travels later took him to Ibiza, where the Balearic sound and nightlife left a lasting imprint. After years in Bristol’s sound system culture and Berlin’s club circuit, Jona returned to the UK in 2020 and developed his eclectic style further.
Alongside Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering, Jona formed the duo Sapience and released Nocturnal on Tom Middleton’s Sound of the Cosmos label. The track gained support from influential tastemakers including Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier, establishing Jona’s standing within underground circles.
His career is rooted in a lifelong commitment to rave, Balearic and club culture. Kava, originally from New Zealand, had been based in Berlin for over a decade at the time of publication.
His roots lie in Wellington, where his early years were shaped by Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass. He worked in vinyl distribution and hosted radio shows, actively contributing to the local scene before relocating to Berlin.
There, he co-hosted Float Some and Jet Some with Rodi Kirk (Scratch 22) on Berlin Community Radio, a platform that expanded his presence across the city’s electronic music community. He is known in Berlin’s clubs for wide-ranging selections.
Jona and Kava first connected through mutual friends near OYE Records in Berlin, quickly discovering their shared vision. Their collaboration led to the creation of Many Hands and the Basement Soul party series, known for its inclusive atmosphere and eclectic, rhythm-driven playlists.
Their sets move between Disco, Soul, Latin, Afrobeat, MPC beats, drum machines and synth-heavy grooves. With Basement Soul, Many Hands bring a global approach to the dancefloor, combining deep-rooted traditions with contemporary selections.
Many Hands' Basement Soul episode 43 opens with Dynasty’s Adventures In The Land Of Music on Solar in R&B territory, followed by Isaac Aseili’s Creatness on Bandcamp, where funk, soul and neo soul set the tone. Sa Ra Creative Partners’ Hey Love (Instrumental) on The Hollywood Recordings and Erin Buku & Jonny Faith’s Tomorrow on Inner Tribe add Hip Hop and electronic soul flavours.
