DJ Marco Mei presents Bicycle Corporation with guest DJ Brendon P for episode 12 of Electronic Roots on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian collaboration between DJ and producer Marco MEI and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. During the early 1990s, Marco began his career as a DJ and producer and started organising events across Italy with the Urban People crew.
His work with Urban People earned recognition and led to a residency at Pacha, followed by DJ bookings internationally. The experience established a musical path that has taken him around the world.
Born and raised in Torino, Stefano showed a strong aptitude for music from childhood. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums with commitment, drawing on Chopin as well as West African djembe traditions.
As a teenager, Stefano became increasingly interested in the DJ's relationship with the crowd. The electronic beats that were difficult to find on Italian radio during the 1990s opened a new chapter that later developed into Bicycle Corporation.
Bicycle Corporation released a Hard Techno remix of Virus D.D.Ds' Origination, which was featured in Beatport staff picks. The track is a notable example of the duo's recorded work.
Marco is based in Taipei and works across a wider South East Asian network. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency and broadcasts weekly on the radio station.
Guest DJ Brendon P.
DJ Brendon P whose real name is Brendon Perera is a native of Singapore and prefers the low-profile, lo-fi approach to his work and has performed as a disc jockey for over four decades. Brendon P has a long history of Clubs and Music; starting in 1980, in the Singaporean mobile DJ circuit, and moving on to clubs a year later. A visit to New York in 1984, and visiting clubs such as the Funhouse, the Paradise Garage, Dancetaria and Area weaned him into the New York club culture, and into the music that was to become the house music that we hear today.
Crossing vast musical backgrounds over his years as a DJ, both locally and internationally, he continued to acquire a keen ear and passion for dance music his main genres now being House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge, and Electronica. From doing the club rounds in the ’80s, both locally and internationally, with the Juliana’s and Bacchus groups, residencies with Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX in the ’90s, a 9-year residency at the globally renowned, Zouk Club in Singapore. Between July 2001 and May 2009 he held a 2-year Residency at Kyo, and spending the last five years on the team of residents at the Swanky CE LA VI Rooftop Club & Skybar at Marina Bay Sands, he continues to be a regular feature in the local and international club circuit today.
Having DJ'ed in cities across the globe (including Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taiwan, Hanoi & Hong Kong, just to name a few), and has also played at the world-renowned (and now defunct) Cielo Club in New York, in June 2010. Brendon, in his own and separate right, as a producer, has also released his original material and remixes on In The Woods (USA), Los Grandes (Spain), Reversoulmusic (USA), Audio Parallax (UK), Hotbox Music (USA), Soul Shift (USA), Defected (UK), Rawjak (SG), Eclesia (SG), Issys Groove (UK), Love International (MY) and One With Music (SG).
With his stringent adherence to music style and sophistication and attention to detail, it's not difficult to understand why Nicolas Mattar, owner of New York's 'Cielo' and ‘Output’, calls him a 'taste master' and one of the best DJ's in the region. Expect nothing less from him, than a set that crosses vast musical boundaries; past, present and future.
DJ Brendon P opens Electronic Roots Episode 12 with Echonomist’s remix of Metaman featuring Lena Platonos, placing Indie Dance at the front of the set. Thandi Draai follows with “Iris,” whose original Get Physical version is classified as Melodic House and Techno.
Roy Ayers appears through Âme’s remix of “Tarzan” before Felipe Gordon brings in Deep House with “Momma Its A Long Journey.” Fantastic Man follows before Nickodemus and Grey Reverend introduce Electronica through DJ Spinna’s remix of “Music Man.”
Takeshi Kouzuki leads into Soul Clap and Sha-Lor’s “Jussa Come,” whose Blasé Vanguard B-Mix sits in Bass Music territory through its Bass / Club and UK Funky classification. Âme’s “Shiro” then shifts back into deep house before Black Coffee’s unreleased Jonny Miller Afro Tek Mix adds an Afro House element.
Frankey & Sandrino’s “Wandering” receives a Phonique remix officially listed as deep house, while Chez N Trent and Outlines keep the middle-to-late section rooted in house music. 9th House’s “Equinox” is classified as House Music, giving the set another clear club-house reference.
Skream introduces Tech House through “Still Lemonade,” followed by DJ Gregory’s Âme treatment of “Elle” in deeper house territory. Francesco Tristano closes the episode with Carl Craig’s remix of “The Melody,” a version classified as house, ending Brendon P’s set with another link to classic electronic club music.
