Many Hands, the Berlin/UK DJ duo, present episode 41 of Basement Soul on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the collaborative project of DJs Jona J and Kava, each bringing their own background and musical experience. Jona Jefferies, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, has long-standing ties to the music industry.
He began DJing in the early 1990s within the free party and rave scenes of southwest England. His musical path later took him to Ibiza, where he was inspired by the island’s Balearic sound and nightlife.
He returned regularly as both a raver and performer before eventually relocating to Bristol. There, he immersed himself in the city’s sound system culture and spent years developing his skills.
Jona later joined Berlin’s diverse club scene and performed at a range of venues before settling back in the UK in 2020. As part of the duo Sapience with Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering, Jona contributed to Nocturnal, released on Tom Middleton’s Sound of the Cosmos label.
The track gained radio support from Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier. Kava, originally from New Zealand, has lived in Berlin for over a decade.
His musical roots trace back to Wellington, where he developed his sound through Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. In his early years, he worked in vinyl distribution and hosted radio shows, helping to shape the local music community.
After moving to Berlin, Kava co-hosted Float Some and Jet Some with Rodi Kirk (Scratch 22) on Berlin Community Radio, a platform that helped him gain recognition across the city’s scene. He has since performed at various venues throughout Berlin and is a recognised figure in the local DJ circuit.
Jona and Kava met through a mutual connection near OYE Records in Berlin, quickly bonding over shared tastes and influences. Their musical chemistry led to the creation of Many Hands and the launch of Basement Soul, a regular party held in a Berlin basement known for its inclusive atmosphere and eclectic selection.
Their sets span a wide range of styles, incorporating Disco, Soul, Latin, Afrobeat, MPC beats, drum machines, and synthesised grooves. With influences stretching from Jamaican sounds in New York to West African rhythms, Many Hands bring a deeply rhythmic and global approach to the dancefloor.
Many Hands’ Basement Soul episode 41 on Scientific Sound Asia opens with Jonny Wildey’s Closer on WotNot Music Ltd, followed by Children Of Zeus’s Balance featuring Akemi Fox and Georgie Sweet on First Word Records. Marian Tone and Aischa Oz bring On Your Way from Dezi Belle Records into Marco Polo and J*Davey’s Relax on Slice-of-Spice, keeping the opening rooted in Pop, jazz-influenced keys and Hip Hop flow.
East Coast Love Affair’s Date With The Rain, featuring P. Hunningale and L. Ross, arrives via Athens Of The North before Jill Francis’s Make Love To Me (Lovers Mix) brings UK Street Soul from MJR Records. Sinbad’s Gangsta Riddim precedes Psychedelic Digestion Therapy’s Nu-Disco cut Palmtree Calling on Strangelove Music.
Pete Dunaway’s Nu-Disco selection Supermarket on Mr Bongo gives way to Scribble’s Mother Of Pearl on Regular Records, bringing a Dance Music turn. Panache’s Every Brother Ain’t A Brother in Jura Soundsystem’s extended mix follows on R & R Records, before Sofa, Housechyar and Okay Termiz present Der Wunsch Service on Second Circle.
The Earons’ extended version of Land Of Hunger on Island Records brings Dub into Squidgenini’s Electronica piece Circle;line from Beats Of No Nation. Js Bumps’s Gotmehii_v1, Greaves’s Dancefloor Simulator, Surly’s Booty On Fire and Zero Db’s Marc Mac Bruk Remix of Party Girl extend the electronic middle section.
Delfonic and Kapote’s Pana Rejam on Illegal Jazz Records introduces a Jazz & Blues-inflected passage, followed by Mara TK and Troy Kingi’s Pacific selection Every Hori Is A Star on Extra Soul Perception. T-Woc’s Midnight Magic on Strangelove Music then shifts into House Music.
Noah Slee’s Soulphiction Remix of Radar on Best’s Friends supplies the programme’s Deep House moment before Walla C’s Yukata on Soundcloud returns to House Music. Ed Seven’s I Need U 2, featuring Tan Brown and Phat Kat on Inner Tribe Records, closes the set with one last soulful record.
