Marco Mei presents his 2021 Podcast 22 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency and promoter publishing music news across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
Bicycle Corporation's Marco Mei has been part of the Italian underground since the early 1990s, when afrobeat, funk and synthesised music first drew him to the decks. That mix of influences has kept his approach to selection eclectic across a career spanning more than thirty years.
A residency at Pacha Club in Sharm-El-Sheikh put him on a broader international circuit early on. He has since played Woo Bar, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, Fuse in Brussels, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk, sharing booths with Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Funk D'Void and others.
In 2009 he and Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, formed Bicycle Corporation, picking up their first deal with 17:44 Records. Output across Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox has grown to over fifty tracks and remixes spanning deep house, tech house, French house and techno, while the duo made their earliest recordings available through Bandcamp.
Marco is based in Taipei and plays regularly across South East Asia, where a network of artists and collaborators has developed through years of appearances in the region. Keep up with his latest activity on Facebook, and bookings are available through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency, alongside his weekly broadcast on the radio station.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 22 opens in classic House Music territory with Mamacita's Tu Amor in the Frankie Knuckles Your Love Spanish Version, before Mpharanyana and The Peddlers's Disco in the Jamie 326 Extended Edit brings Afrobeat from Kalita Records. Waterstone and Tracy Hamlin's I Miss You on Groove Culture supplies soul and Disco warmth, while the Minnie Riperton sample connects the track to the foundational influences of Soulful House.
Krystal Klear's Piano Banana on Running Back brings piano riffs from the Italian house tradition, followed by Joone and Victor C.'s The Affair featuring 1403 on Secret Fusion, an Indie Dance entry. O.D.Math's Olympus in the Danny K7 Remix and Tommy Farrow's Let's Just in the Jansons Remix move through Deep House and Tech House, before Darksidevinyl and Addfx's Disappear returns to a deeper, more minimal register.
Loco Dice and Ghostface Killah's Cherchez Laghost makes an unexpected turn, its Wu-Tang connection bringing a hip hop character into contrast with the surrounding House selections. Seth Troxler's Lumartes on CircoLoco Records restores a direct House Music quality before Stylo and Space Motion's Yeke Yeke featuring Mory Kante on Space Motion Records introduces Afro House energy drawn from Kante's 1987 West African original.
Jerome Sydenham and Fatima Njai's Trans Afro Express featuring Mario Punchard on Rekids sustains the Afro House direction, before Ejeca's Free From in the Cinthie Remix on Shall Not Fade returns to Deep House. James Solace and Jansons's 54 and Demuir's Feels So Good on Sola carry the middle stretch through House Music, then Dimitri From Paris and Aeroplane's Can't Get Enough featuring Leela in the Yuksek Remix on Partyfine delivers a Disco turn.
Elninodiablo's Dorotheas Rainbow in the Riding The Rainbow Remix on El Nino Diablo Music makes its second appearance across consecutive Marco Mei podcasts, bringing Nu-Disco into the late section. Ghettoblaster's Keep The Fire Burnin' on Too Many Rules and Everybody Come On with DJ Dan provide House and Jackin House selections, while Alex Virgo's The Cadet adds Dance Music before Marius's New Orleans on Chineurs de House.
Earth Trax's Ambient Dance on Shall Not Fade brings Peak Time Techno alongside a Melodic House and Techno quality. Ricardo Villalobos and Barry White's 808 The Bassqueen in the Delicia Edit follows with Minimal Tech qualities, while the Lurre Edit of Snoop Dogg's Sensual Seduction, Daft Punk's Something About Us in the Hari Edit and The Streets's Has It Come To This give pop and hip hop reworks, plus an early-2000s UK Garage track, a House treatment that closes the set.
