Marco Mei presents 2021 Podcast 21 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, music-news platform and promoter covering electronic music across Japan, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka and beyond.
With over thirty years behind him as a DJ and producer, Marco Mei has built a career that spans continents and genres. His roots in afrobeat and early synthesised music gave him a wider frame of reference when he stepped into DJing in Italy in the early 1990s.
The Pacha Club residency in Sharm-El-Sheikh was an early turning point that widened his circuit considerably, with appearances at Woo Bar, Fuse in Brussels, Room 18 in Taipei, Bangaluu in Berlin, G-Star in Pattaya, SOS Supper Club in Bali and NLO in Minsk following across subsequent years. He can be found on Facebook.
Over the years he has appeared alongside Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D'Void among others. Those shared stages helped establish a reputation extending well beyond Italy's borders.
Bicycle Corporation, his production partnership with Stefano Ugliano, known as 6884, grew out of a meeting of musical minds in 2009. Their output through 17:44 Records and subsequent labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, GrooveTraxx, Suka and Revox runs to over fifty tracks and remixes, while early material is available through their Bandcamp page for those wishing to explore the back catalogue.
Based in Taipei, Marco plays regularly across South East Asia and stays connected to a network of artists and promoters developed through those appearances. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency and broadcasts weekly on our radio station.
Marco Mei's 2021 Podcast 21 opens with Dubby Disco Boyz's Shift Up Your Gear on THE KYOTO TRAX and Andy Bach's Free Your Body on Duchesse, establishing a warm Nu-Disco tone. Mr Doris and Dazzla's Everything Is Anything on Ghetto Disco Records brings a Bootsy-sampled vocal and rubbery bass, while Elninodiablo's Dorotheas Rainbow on El Nino Diablo Music adds an Indie Dance edge.
Lauer and Dena's Make It Stay in the Gerd Janson Remix on Permanent Vacation returns to a warmer Nu-Disco direction after Elninodiablo's cosmic turn. An unknown artist's Get Together, featuring a St.Germain sample, introduces Deep House and a jazz-informed quality, before Ron Trent's In Time featuring TKumah Sadeek draws on the vocal-house traditions of Chicago and New York.
Luke Alessi's Matter featuring Stereo MCs in the Aaaron Remix on Mobilee Records and Rob Nunjes's Lose Control featuring Naima and Jax Milton in the Master T Rox Remake carry the programme through Melodic House and Techno and House Music territory. TSOS and Benjy's Kalamba on Moon Rocket Music introduces an Afro House flavour, while Mehari's Fame in the Luciano Vocal Remix on Cadenza, Theo Poles's Every Woman featuring Whitney Houston and Rambal Cochet's Fatima Goes Wild sustain the groove.
Trance Wax's Northern Sky in the Dusky Remix on Anjunabeats pushes into Progressive House territory, before გიორგი ახალაია's AGAPE provides a culturally distinctive moment through its Electronica and World Music sensibility. Karim Sahraoui's Nightflow on Transmat Records then arrives as the set's defining Peak Time Techno moment, connecting the programme to Derrick May's Detroit label and the Motor City's electronic music legacy.
Cinthie's City Lights in the Gerd Janson Remix on AUS Music and Shannon's Let The Music Play in Alan Fitzpatrick's 6am Terrace Mix on Unidisc Music carry the programme back through Deep House and classic-edit territory. M&S Presents The Girl Next Door's Salsoul Nugget in the Mighty Mouse Remix supplies a Soulful House and Nu-Disco moment rooted in the Salsoul legacy, while MD X-Spress's God Made Me Phunky in the 10 Years Of Eats Everything Extended Remix on DVINE Sounds and DJ Gregory's And on Faya Combo sustain the house-focused direction.
Richy Ahmed and Jamie Jones's I Need It brings Tech House energy to the closing stretch before De La Soul's Me Myself And I in the RIZZ Edit closes the podcast. The 1989 Native Tongues classic is recontextualised within a House framework, in keeping with Marco Mei's willingness to reach outside electronic music's conventional boundaries.
