Joshua announces track-list for new shows 6th of July 2020

DJ Joshua presents another edition of Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.

Based in Évora, Portugal, he has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s and has built his collection across vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital formats. His musical background extends through House, Techno, Drum and Bass, Chillout and other electronic styles developed across decades of collecting, DJing and radio.

He began mixing during the early 1990s and soon became an enthusiastic vinyl collector before becoming involved with local radio. He also performed at events organised with friends and worked alongside local artists as Portugal’s rave and underground electronic scenes continued to develop.

After stepping away from regular DJ activity to concentrate on family life, he eventually returned to music and established Floating Beats. The programme became an outlet for the deeper, progressive and hypnotic side of his collection, combining atmospheric selections with controlled pacing and underground House and Techno.

Velvety Elements later developed as a complementary programme with a warmer and more soulful identity. Its selections place greater emphasis on groove, melody and deeper shades of House, giving him a separate space for music that differs from the more hypnotic direction of Floating Beats.

His production work has expanded through several aliases that allow different sides of his musical background to remain distinct. Joshua Marian is associated with warmer, soulful and melodic material, while Joshua Fernand concentrates on tougher club-focused Techno and more forceful rhythmic structures.

As Joshua Marian, releases including Soul Zone and Love My Soul on Bassment Tapes reflect the more soulful side of his catalogue. Further productions such as Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always On My Mind and I Can Go You Can See continue that connection with groove-led electronic music.

The K Joshua project explores more hypnotic, spacious, dub-influenced and experimental territory. Releases including Promised Work, Stranger Things, As You Are and Slow Laziness demonstrate a more abstract production direction while retaining the depth found throughout his wider work.

Joshua Fernand provides a stronger contrast through contemporary Techno and more direct club material. Tracks including Blue River, Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal give the project a tougher and more percussive identity than his Joshua Marian and K Joshua output.

In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his own productions and other underground electronic music. The label connects his studio work with the same long-standing interest in independent electronic music that has shaped his DJing and radio activity.

He describes his approach simply: “Music is an art form. It is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move.” That philosophy connects both programmes, with Floating Beats exploring deeper and more hypnotic territory while Velvety Elements concentrates on warmer, soulful and groove-focused House.

Floating Beats 437 opens with Devv's Current State, setting a stripped and low-slung Deep Tech House tone before Gorge's Depth of Silence brings a more direct Tech House pulse into the mix. Jorge Caiado's Mad Chords adds a warmer Deep House turn, while Ben Sterling's Surrender restores the tighter club pressure.

Antranig's Ride It Out broadens the session into House Music before David Museen and Erik Christiansen return to Tech House with Stereotypes. Charlie Banks and iO (Mulen) then bring the set back towards deeper, more minimal rhythms, giving the middle of the programme a stronger underground edge.

Sandrinha's Dirty Mind briefly opens the sound up again with a straight House groove before Neverdogs return to deeper territory on Underground Activity. Hector Couto closes Floating Beats 437 with Shut the F. Up, finishing an hour that balances Tech House drive with Deep Tech House weight and a small number of warmer House and Deep passages.

Velvety Elements 010 begins with Frag Maddin's Stuhltanz, immediately establishing a fuller House feel before Mancini's The Mermaid's Sound adds a deeper and more tightly wound rhythm. Forteba's remix of Johnny Da Cruz then moves the session firmly into Deep House, followed by Ridney and Coeo, who keep the early stages spacious and groove-led.

Strobelight Shadow's 2012 adds a Tech House shift before AtLows introduces Funky House with How Do I Get to Detroit. Archie Hamilton then returns the set to Deep Tech House, while Forteba and Carlo Gambino's remix of Franck Roger and Mandel Turner restore the warmer Deep House character through the closing stretch.

Hideo Kobayashi finishes Velvety Elements 010 with No Nothing, giving the episode a firmer Tech House ending after a largely deep and restrained programme. Together, the two shows underline the contrast between Floating Beats' more club-driven Tech House and Deep Tech House balance and Velvety Elements' warmer Deep House foundation.
