Disc jockey duo Many Hands (Berlin/UK) present the track list for Basement Soul show 37 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency, and music-news platform serving expatriates and local audiences across Asia.
Many Hands is the creative project of versatile DJs Jona J & Kava. Jona Jefferies, born in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, is deeply rooted in the music scene.
Jona’s DJ career began in southwest England’s free party and rave scene during the early nineties. After moving to Ibiza, he became captivated by the island’s Balearic sound and hedonistic culture, returning regularly as both a raver and a DJ.
Following Ibiza, Jona moved to Bristol, where he was influenced by the city’s sound system culture, spending several years honing his skills. An open-minded artist, he later became part of Berlin’s international music community, performing across venues before returning to the UK in 2020.
One of Jona’s releases, Nocturnal, was a collaboration with Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering under the name 'Sapience' for Tom Middleton’s Sound Of The Cosmos label. The track gained radio play by Gilles Peterson, Mala, and Laurent Garnier.
Originally from New Zealand, Kava has lived in Berlin for over ten years. His journey into music began in Wellington’s vibrant music scene, deeply influenced by genres including Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno, and Drum and Bass.
Kava’s early years in New Zealand included selling vinyl records and hosting radio shows. Upon relocating to Berlin, he became a resident on a monthly radio show, Float Some and Jet Some, hosted alongside Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame on Berlin Community Radio, which has since closed.
Through his work in Berlin, Kava gained recognition. He performed across numerous venues, solidifying his reputation in the city’s music community.
Jona and Kava connected through a mutual contact near OYE Records in Berlin, instantly recognising their musical chemistry. This led to the formation of Many Hands, a unique dance session often called “Basement Soul”, held in a Berlin basement.
Jona J & Kava’s sets cover a rich spectrum, from Disco, Soul, Latin, and Afrobeat to MPCs, drum machines, and synthesised beats. Their selections draw from New York’s Jamaican influence to West African rhythms.
Basement Soul show 37 opens with Mara Tk and Toroa’s The Albatross before Dream Dolphin’s Take No Michi brings Ambient / Experimental detail from Music From Memory. The episode originally aired on Friday, 19th March.
