The Many Hands DJ duo present their Basement Soul show 36 playlist on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the project of musically absorbed, wide-ranging DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona's real name is Jona Jefferies, and he was born in Barcelona before being raised in Spain and the UK.
He began DJing in the free-party and rave scene of south-west England during the early nineties. After relocating to Ibiza, he was drawn to its Balearic sound and hedonistic style, and has returned to the island as both a raver and DJ.
Following his time in Ibiza, Jona moved to Bass City, Bristol, where its inner-city outlook and sound-system culture shaped several years spent honing his craft. After being well received within Berlin's international music community and playing venues across the city, he returned to the United Kingdom early in 2020.
Jona released Nocturnal with his old friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering as Sapience, through Tom Middleton's Sound Of The Cosmos label. The release received radio plays from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.
Raised in New Zealand, Kava has made Berlin his home for more than ten years. His musical education began in Wellington's melodic music scene, alongside regular exposure to Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass.
In New Zealand, Kava sold vinyl records and hosted radio programmes on several stations. On moving to Berlin, he became an early resident of a monthly radio show with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame.
The programme, titled Float Some and Jet Some, ran for a considerable period on the now-defunct Berlin Community Radio. It brought him wider attention alongside appearances at venues across the German capital.
Jona and Kava met through a close ally near OYE Records in Berlin, and immediately recognised their musical connection. That meeting led to Many Hands and its eclectic, dance-focused Basement Soul sessions in the heart of Berlin.
Jona J and Kava work across a rhythmic and harmonic cultural spectrum. Latin Music and Afrobeat sit alongside MPCs, drum machines, Jamaicans in New York, West Africans with synthesisers and funky Euro-freaks.
Their selections can be quirky or bashy, but are always intended for dancers. This edition originally aired on Friday 5 March.
Many Hands' Basement Soul 36 episode opens with Bassline's Back To Bass-ics on Isle of Jura, bringing a Nu-Disco foundation. Garrett's Chasing The Clouds Away on Glydezone Recordings introduces Ambient space before Ghetto Priest's Hercules on Late Night Tales and Jim's Phoenix on NuNorthern Soul bring in Organic House.
Christine Lewin's Juicy Fruit, released by Athens Of The North, returns to Nu-Disco, while Special Touch's Garden Of Life on Heels & Souls Recordings brings Electronica into the sequence. Minako Yoshida's Black Moon on Sony Music Direct (Japan) Inc. adds a pop note, then Mark Seven's Pillow Talk on Endless Flight turns towards Indie Dance.
Dām-Funk's Paradise on Glydezone Recordings and Pascal Davoz's Cinema on Born Bad Records place Funk at the centre of the programme. Via Negromonte's Love Is All on Epic then introduces MPB, a form of Brazilian music, before the set moves back towards the club.
Benedek's Fever on L.I.E.S. Records establishes House Music, followed by A Man Called Adam's C.P.I in Andrew Weatherall's Godiva Mix on Big Life. 3 Chairs' Misty City on Three Chairs and The Spaces Between featuring Harry Dennis with Ghosts, in the Black Science Orchestra Remix#2 on F*CLR Records, keep the house focus intact.
Willie Graff and Tuccillo's The Moment on Hell Yeah Recordings brings Deep House into the later stretch, with Phil Asher's Evoke on Houseology restoring a more direct house feel. Leftfield's Not Forgotten in its Dub Mix on Outer Rhythm gives way to Manix's Your Love Is Over on Reinforced Records and its Peak Time Techno pressure.
Hanna's Spaceland on Rush Hour returns to Deep House before Kush Jones' Worldly Rhythm on Future Times introduces bass-focused Bass Music and club rhythm. Mameem 3's Afrocordeon on Planet Trip Records leads into Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay's How Much Are They? on Island Records, where Dub meets Mac Gregor's African music selection Nan Ye Likan on Hot Casa Records.
