Bicycle Corporation welcome guest DJ Brendon P for episode 72 of their Roots programme on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian DJ and production partnership of Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. The pair have released more than 50 productions across Techno, Deep House, House, Melodic and French House.
Marco began his career in the early 1990s, working with the crew behind events including Urban People. His growing profile in Italy led to bookings abroad as his work reached an international audience.
Stefano, who is from Turin, Italy, showed an early aptitude for music and devoted much of his spare time to it. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, while developing an appreciation for Chopin and West African djembe.
Although he was drawn to many forms of music, Stefano was particularly fascinated by DJs and the records they played. Those sounds were seldom heard on Italian radio at the time, but they became a lasting point of focus for him.
Making this music, let alone playing it to large crowds, could have appeared an unlikely ambition. Stefano pursued that ambition with determination, and Bicycle Corporation was eventually formed.
Marco and Stefano have retained an interest in their earlier work, and at the time of publication they had been revisiting some of those tracks. They also established a Bandcamp page to distribute them, while Bicycle Corporation are available for booking through the DJ agency in Asia.

DJ Brendon P whose real name is Brendon Perera is a Singaporean native and prefers the low-profile, lo-fi approach to his work. With a career that’s almost 4 decades young and still growing, Brendon P has a long history of Clubs and Music.
It all started in 1980, in the local mobile circuit, and he moved on to Clubs a year later. A visit to New York in 1984, and visiting clubs such as the Funhouse, the Paradise Garage, Dancetaria and Area weaned him into the New York club culture, and into the music that was to become the house music that we hear today.
Crossing vast musical backgrounds (House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge, Electronica) over his years as a DJ, both locally and internationally, he continued to acquire a keen ear and passion for dance music. From doing the Club rounds in the ’80s, both locally and internationally.
He has had residencies with the Juliana’s and Bacchus groups, residencies with Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX in the ’90s, and a 9-year residency at the globally renowned, Zouk Club in Singapore. Between July 2001 and May 2009, he also held a 2-year Residency at Kyo, and spent 4 and a half years on the team of Residents at the Swanky CE LA VI Rooftop Club & Skybar at Marina Bay Sands.
He continues to be a regular feature in the local and International Club Circuit today. He has DJ'ed in cities across the globe including Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taiwan, Hanoi and Hong Kong, just to name a few.
He also had the privilege of playing at the world-renowned (and now defunct) Cielo Club in New York, in June 2010. Brendon, in his own and separate right, as a producer, has also released his original material and remixes on In The Woods (USA), Los Grandes (Spain), Reversoulmusic (USA), Audio Parallax (UK), and many others.
With his stringent adherence to music style and sophistication and attention to detail, it's not difficult to understand why Nicolas Mattar, owner of New York's 'Cielo' and ‘Output’, calls him a 'taste-master' and one of the best DJ's in the region. Expect nothing less from him, than a set that crosses vast musical boundaries; past, present and future.
Bicycle Corporation's Roots 72 with Brendon P opens with Rim Kwaku Obeng's Gas Line in the Nik Weston Edit, a Tropical Disco and Disco introduction from Mukatsuku Records and BBE Records. Todh Teri's Sampadan 28 on TODH008 follows with an angular Indie Dance edge.
Daniel Avery and The Deadstock 33s take the programme further into Indie Dance through Eric Zann (Revisited) on Toy Tonics, before Dave Mathmos brings Take A Chance As You Go from Slightly Transformed. Eartha Kitt's Pete Le Freq Refreq of Where Is My Man? then leads to Fixed Angles' Anikana on Bonfido Disques, where the Tropical Disco direction comes forward.
Todh Teri returns with Sampadan 1 on TODH001, followed by Schaltkreis Wassermann's Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi Aramis Mix of Non Stop Electronic Music on Opilec Music. A-Tweed's Dengue Dengue Dengue remix of Dodo Crash Report on Hard Fist Recordings and Ralph Rosario's Pete Le Freq re-work of You Used To Hold Me prepare the way for Black Box's Strike It Up in Brendon P's re-edit, a House Music record originally issued by Polydor.
Immaje's Luv Ride (Jazzy Style) on Movin' Records and Pete LeFreq's Anthemic hold the middle of the selection before Aymeric's Peace arrives on Ravanelli Disco Club. The latter introduces Nu-Disco colour, while The Patchouli Brothers' Made In France on Pleasure Of Love brings the set back towards the dancefloor.
Ziggy Phunk's Space Ranger on See-Saw keeps the Disco emphasis in place, followed by Elado Edits' Gulab Jamun on Razor N' Tape. Austin Ato's Tony on Pantai People shifts back towards Indie Dance, and Marc Roberts' Dragon's Breath, also on Pantai People, extends that late-set momentum.
Swan Lake's SanFrandisko edit of In The Name Of Love on Bad Boys Records provides the penultimate change of pace. Irfane closes with the Original Unreleased Mix of Just A Little Lovin' on Sonar Kollektiv, giving the programme a softer final record.
