DJ Joshua returns with another edition of Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an electronic music radio station, event promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s and developed his knowledge through years of listening, collecting and broadcasting. His wider musical background includes House, Drum and Bass, Chillout and Techno, with each style contributing differently to his approach as a selector.
During his teenage years, Joshua began working towards becoming a DJ alongside others involved in Portugal’s developing underground scene. He collected vinyl, helped promote rave music and contributed to local radio programmes covering several areas of electronic music.
That activity placed him close to the emergence of Portugal’s rave culture during the early 1990s. It also strengthened his belief in radio as an important outlet for introducing listeners to electronic music that often received little exposure through mainstream channels.
Alongside broadcasting, Joshua played at gatherings organised with friends and other members of the local scene. Those early experiences helped him develop an understanding of how different electronic styles could function in both social and dancefloor environments.
When his first child was born, Joshua stepped away from regular musical activity to concentrate on family life. He later returned to DJing and broadcasting once his child was older, beginning a new phase that eventually developed into Floating Beats.
Floating Beats became an outlet for deeper, progressive and underground electronic music, allowing Joshua to work with longer musical structures and gradual changes in atmosphere. The programme reflects his broader interest in Techno and related styles while giving each selection room to develop naturally.
Velvety Elements explores a different side of his collection and concentrates more closely on House Music. Warmer grooves, deeper rhythms and more soulful material give the series its own identity while retaining the careful pacing found throughout Joshua’s radio work.
Both programmes have since appeared through online stations in different parts of the world. Their continued development has allowed Joshua to reconnect with electronic music through broadcasting while maintaining the broad musical outlook formed during his earlier years in Portugal.
For Joshua, music remains a form of expression built from rhythm, melody and atmosphere rather than simply a sequence of individual tracks. Floating Beats and Velvety Elements provide two complementary spaces for exploring that idea, with each programme approaching underground electronic music from a different direction.
DJ Joshua opens Floating Beats 466 with Estroe, Leo Janeiro and Hauy before Anja Schneider and Dave Angel push the first hour towards a deeper, more hypnotic form of Techno. Dave Seaman's "Rapscallion's Revenge" in the Ian O'Donovan remix introduces a stronger Progressive House pull, giving the middle of the hour a more expansive melodic shape.
Petit Beurre and Theobald Ringer continue the gradual progression before Laurent Garnier and Chambray add a looser, more groove-driven edge with "Feelin' Good". Madben, BVBYLON and Brame & Hamo then close the first hour with a tougher electronic run that keeps the balance between techno pressure and more flexible club rhythms.
The second hour shifts into Velvety Elements 038, where Chris Stussy sets a warmer tone before Franck Roger and Jovonn move firmly into Deep House. Dimmish, Harrison BDP and Archie Hamilton then tighten the groove through deeper tech-driven house, while Daniel Steinberg and Makito maintain the swing without losing the understated character of the hour.
Clio and SLZ lead into Angel Moraes' remix of Ariel Baund and Toby Holguin before DJ Linus, Platzdasch with Dix and Simon Shaw complete the programme. Across both hours, DJ Joshua moves from techno and progressive material into Deep Tech House and classic-leaning house grooves, giving the two-part broadcast a clear contrast while keeping the overall flow cohesive.
