DJ Joshua's Floating Beats and Velvety Elements programmes were announced on Scientific Sound Asia for 11 January 2021. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Portuguese electronic music enthusiast DJ Joshua, also known as Joshua Mar, values the extensive record collection that strongly informs his DJing. Raised in Evora, his interest in electronic music began at a young age and developed into a fascination with styles including house, Drum and Bass, Chill-out and, above all, techno.
During his teenage years in the early nineties, he began the path towards becoming a disc jockey, as many of his contemporaries did. He collected vinyl, helped spread rave music and rave culture through local radio programmes featuring different electronic genres, and played turntables at events organised with friends and like-minded people.
His passion for electronic music also brought him into contact with the rise of rave culture in Portugal. Recognising the value of a local radio outlet for cutting-edge electronic genres, he sought to establish a space for that music.
Following the birth of his first child, Joshua took a break from music to prioritise fatherhood. When his child was older, he returned to music and launched the radio programme Floating Beats to meet his musical aspirations.
Joshua's radio podcasts, Floating Beats and Velvety Elements, are broadcast on online radio stations around the world. He sees music as an artistic expression that combines components to evoke feelings and movement, imagining melodies floating through the atmosphere before softly landing on listeners and encouraging presence in the moment.
The weekly programmes feature a range of House Music and Techno styles, including Deep House, Tech House, melodic house, Detroit House, Soulful House, Progressive House, vocal house and melodic techno. The programmes debuted on Monday 11 January 2021, presenting the house and techno-focused selections associated with Joshua's shows.
Floating Beats opens with Estroe's Myosotis Arvensis on Rosedale Records, before Leo Janeiro and Hauy's Enigma brings a progressive house turn through Get Physical Music. Anja Schneider's Secret Escapes follows on Sous Music, placing tech house beside the deeper opening material.
Dave Angel's Let The Sun In on Rotation Records raises the pressure with Peak Time Techno. Dave Seaman's Ian O'Donovan remix of Rapscallion's Revenge on Melodic House and Techno label Selador supplies a melodic contrast.
Petit Beurre's Chandra on Motech Records and Theobald Ringer's G10 on Carton-Pate Records sustain the peak-time techno emphasis. Laurent Garnier and Chambray's Feelin' Good on Rekids then shifts the tone back towards house music.
Madben's Robots, released through Sous Music, returns to melodic house and techno before BVBYLON's Arcadia on Rekids enters Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic) territory. These later Floating Beats selections keep the programme rooted in underground electronic music while allowing the tension to deepen.
Velvety Elements begins with Brame & Hamo's Limewire, released by Brame & Hamo, before Chris Stussy's extended Kaizen on PIV settles into deep house. The two records establish the warmer, deeper house direction associated with this programme.
Franck Roger and Jovonn's Vincent G remix of Remember leads into Dimmish's Ramen on MicroHertz and Harrison BDP's Sun Dial on Berg Audio. Both latter selections bring Deep Tech House detail to the centre of the set.
Archie Hamilton featuring The Smoothness contributes Ease My Mind, followed by Daniel Steinberg's Why Do You Hate Me on Arms & Legs. Makito's Dance then keeps the house-focused sequence moving without leaving its restrained club framework.
Clio and SLZ's Local Aliens and Ariel Baund and Toby Holguin's Angel Moraes remix of Naked Musics precede DJ Linus's Samsara on Basica Recordings. Platzdasch and Dix's Frozen Blue on Moiss Music Black and Simon Shaw's The Night on No Fuss Records close Velvety Elements in deep house territory.
