DJ Joshua presents the Floating Beats and Velvety Elements programmes on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, a Portuguese electronic-music enthusiast whose real name is Joshua Mar, values the extensive record collection that has shaped his approach as a DJ. Raised in Évora, he developed an early interest in electronic music and explored styles including House Music, Drum and Bass, Chillout and Techno.
During his teenage years in the early 1990s, Joshua began his path as a disc jockey and immersed himself in collecting vinyl records. He helped popularise rave music and culture through local radio shows spanning several electronic styles, while also playing at events arranged with friends and fellow enthusiasts.
Motivated by his love of electronic music, he watched rave culture grow in Portugal. He saw a need for a local radio outlet that could support innovative electronic genres.
After the birth of his first child, Joshua stepped back from music to focus on fatherhood. When his child was older, he returned to the activity that mattered to him and started the Floating Beats radio show.
Joshua's radio podcasts, Floating Beats and Velvety Elements, are broadcast by online radio stations around the world. He regards music as an art form that brings elements together to stir emotion and encourage movement, and views his programmes as a place to encounter sounds and be present with them.
The programmes were scheduled to premiere on Monday 4 January 2021, presenting House Music and Techno in forms including Deep House, Tech House, Melodic House, Detroit House, Soulful House, Progressive House, Vocal House and Melodic Techno. Floating Beats and Velvety Elements each draw on Joshua's interest in underground electronic music while taking different routes through the records selected for this edition.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with Mosca's Clinical Trial on Not So Much, setting a Tech House foundation before MODEON's Disco Crazy. Ray Kajioka's Chordular on Kanzleramt then raises the pressure with Peak Time Techno.
Yotam Avni's 9th Of May on Kompakt brings Electronica into the opening sequence. Frank Wiedemann's Themroc on Chorus Records follows with Melodic House and Techno, before Gel Abril's Provocateur on Be As One moves into raw, deep and hypnotic Techno.
Assailants a.k.a. Ben Sims and Truncate's Effort 7 keeps the first hour focused on the tougher end of the selection. Ryan Elliott's Snake Charmer on Faith Beat returns to raw, deep and hypnotic Techno, while Deetron's Believer on Mixmag Germany reconnects with Tech House.
Kirk Degiorgio's Mark Broom remix of Arc Mode on Suara gives the Peak Time Techno thread another turn. Robert Babicz's Dark Tales on DIRTCUTS and G Flame's Sterac Stripped remix of Fever on This And That complete Floating Beats through peak-time intensity and Tech House percussion.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with Marc Brauner's An Untold Story before Evren Furtuna's So Far Away on Saisons introduces Deep House. Vincent Casanova's Rough Splash on ebb + flow follows with Deep Tech House, keeping the groove low-slung and detailed.
Sandile's You're My Type on I'm In Love brings the programme into House Music, followed by Jovonn's Inside on Code Red Recordings with a Deep House touch. Purple Ice's Surrender on theBasement Discos sustains the House Music direction with a warmer feel.
DJOKO's Collision provides the next step before Platzdasch and Dix's Frozen Blue on Moiss Music Black returns to Deep House. Secnd's The Run on Kubbo Records brings Deep Tech House back into view, tightening the rhythm as the hour approaches its close.
Bamo's extended mix of The Middle Floor on Guess Records settles into Deep House for the late stretch. Toshi and Timmy Regisford's alternate vocal remix of Kiqi, followed by Natasha Watts' Louie Vega instrumental of Everything, closes Velvety Elements with vocal-led House selections.
