DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, event promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the early 1990s and built his musical knowledge through years of listening, collecting and broadcasting. His background spans House, Techno, Drum and Bass and Chillout, giving his radio work a broad foundation across several generations of electronic music.
During his teenage years, Joshua became closely involved with Portugal’s developing underground scene through DJing, record collecting and local radio. He also played at events organised with friends and fellow enthusiasts while watching rave culture grow across the country.
That early involvement helped shape his belief in radio as an important outlet for electronic music outside the mainstream. It also gave him the experience to develop longer-form programmes where atmosphere, progression and careful selection could take priority over short, isolated peak moments.
After stepping away from regular musical activity to focus on family life, Joshua eventually returned to DJing and broadcasting through Floating Beats. The programme became a dedicated outlet for deeper, progressive and underground electronic music, with Techno and atmospheric material playing an important role in its identity.
Velvety Elements developed as a complementary series focused more closely on House Music. Deep House, Soulful House and groove-led selections give the programme a warmer character while retaining the smooth pacing and attention to flow that run throughout Joshua’s radio work.
Alongside broadcasting, Joshua has become increasingly active as a producer through several aliases. Each project gives him room to explore a different side of electronic music without forcing every release into one musical direction.
As Joshua Fernand, he concentrates primarily on contemporary Techno. Releases including Blue River on MixCult Digital and Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal through his own JFLM Recordings represent a tougher and more rhythm-focused side of his production work.
The Joshua Fernand project also moves into deeper territory through tracks such as Closed Door and Open Door on Radickal Records. Killer’s Plan on Rice Bowl Recordings introduces a more melodic approach, connecting his Techno productions with the atmospheric side of his wider catalogue.
Joshua Marian carries much of his House-focused work and reflects the warmer direction associated with Velvety Elements. Releases such as Soul Zone, Love My Soul, Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See explore Deep House, Soulful House and groove-led electronic music.
His K Joshua alias provides space for more hypnotic and experimental material. Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm draw on Dub Techno, Ambient and deeper rhythmic structures.
Joshua also founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his productions and collaborative projects. The label gives him greater control over how new material is presented while providing a dedicated home for music connected with the different sides of his studio work.
That production activity now feeds naturally back into his radio programmes. Floating Beats explores deeper, progressive and hypnotic electronic music, while Velvety Elements concentrates on warmer House selections built around groove, soul and understated movement.
Together, the two programmes reflect the musical curiosity that has followed Joshua from his early years collecting records in Portugal into his current work as a DJ, producer and label owner. His approach remains centred on using rhythm, melody and atmosphere to create continuity, emotion and a direct connection with the listener.
DJ Joshua opens Floating Beats 462 with Lutzenhouse and Van Czar before Chris Carrier and Charlie Tear bring the first hour towards a stripped, dubby Techno feel. Hideo Kobayashi and Heckman keep the pressure measured, favouring deep textures and steady momentum rather than outright peak-time intensity.
ROWA’s “Zeitraum” receives a John Digweed and Nick Muir remix that adds a clear Progressive House dimension to the middle of the hour. Ian O’Donovan and Satoshi Fumi continue that more melodic direction before Subradeon pulls the mix back towards a firmer techno foundation.
Francesco Fernandez and 2nd Phase complete Floating Beats 462 with a more driving finish, giving the first hour a broad arc from deep and dubby material into progressive and stronger club pressure. Joshua keeps the transitions controlled throughout, building the set with texture, rhythm and gradual increases in energy.
Velvety Elements 034 changes the mood with The Rude Awakening before KVRVBO and Franck Roger establish a warmer Deep House groove. KVRVBO’s remix of Platzdasch, Dix and Kayo Anosike extends that soulful side, while Demuir’s Playboy Edit of Makèz adds a looser and more playful swing.
Hotevilla Javonntte, James Dexter and Lauhaus with Mario Franca keep the second hour rooted in deeper house rhythms before Miane introduces a tighter club pulse. Pedro Costa’s “Acid Kiss” then brings a sharper edge into the mix, linking the warmth of the earlier selections with the more minimal and tech-driven closing section.
Mihai Popoviciu and Chris Stussy with Toman close Velvety Elements 034 with refined Deep Tech House grooves and a more contemporary underground finish. Across both shows, DJ Joshua mixes deep Techno and Progressive House in the first hour with Deep House, Minimal House and Deep Tech House in the second, giving each programme its own distinct identity.
