DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an English-language Asian electronic music radio station, event promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, serving underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the early 1990s and has developed his knowledge through decades of listening, collecting, DJing and broadcasting. His musical background spans House, Techno, Drum and Bass and Chillout, giving his work a broad foundation across several generations of electronic music.
Joshua began DJing during his teenage years, making mixes, collecting vinyl and becoming involved with Portugal’s developing underground scene. He also presented electronic music through local radio and helped organise events with friends and fellow enthusiasts.
As rave culture expanded across Portugal, radio became increasingly important to him as a way of introducing listeners to music outside the mainstream. Those early experiences later influenced the longer-form approach he developed through his own programmes.
After stepping away from regular musical activity for a period to concentrate on family life, Joshua returned to DJing and broadcasting through Floating Beats. The programme became an outlet for deeper, progressive and hypnotic electronic music, with Techno and melodic material playing important roles in its identity.
Velvety Elements developed as a complementary series centred more closely on the warmer and more soulful side of House Music. Deep House, Soulful House, Vocal House and groove-led selections give the programme its own character while retaining the careful pacing found throughout Joshua’s radio work.
Alongside broadcasting, Joshua has become increasingly active as a producer through several aliases. Each project gives him space to explore a different side of electronic music while maintaining a connection with the tastes developed through decades of collecting and DJing.
As Joshua Fernand, he concentrates primarily on contemporary Techno and more driving electronic material. Releases including Blue River on MixCult Digital and Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal through his own JFLM Recordings represent the tougher side of his studio work.
The Joshua Fernand project also reaches into deeper and more melodic territory through tracks such as Closed Door and Open Door on Radickal Records. Killer’s Plan on Rice Bowl Recordings extends that side of his catalogue towards Melodic House and Techno.
Joshua Marian carries much of his House-focused production work and connects naturally with the warmer direction of Velvety Elements. Releases including Soul Zone, Love My Soul, Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See explore deeper, soulful and groove-led House.
His K Joshua alias moves further into hypnotic and experimental electronic music. Tracks such as Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm draw on Dub Techno, Ambient and deeper rhythmic structures.
Joshua also founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his productions and collaborative projects. The label gives him greater control over how new material is released while providing a dedicated home for music connected with the different sides of his studio work.
That production activity now feeds directly back into his broadcasting. Floating Beats explores deeper, progressive, hypnotic and Techno-oriented electronic music, while Velvety Elements concentrates on warmer House selections built around groove, soul and understated movement.
Together, the two programmes reflect the same musical curiosity that has followed Joshua from his early years collecting records in Portugal into his current work as a DJ, producer and label owner. His approach remains centred on rhythm, melody, atmosphere and the emotional connection that carefully selected electronic music can create with the listener.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with Ritz's Glory Dayz on Piston Recordings, establishing a Deep House foundation. Chappier's Gone on Three Hands Records then brings Melodic House and Techno into the opening stretch.
Ian O'Donovan's Karim Sahraoui remix of Sentient City, released by When We Dip Records, extends the melodic direction before G-Prod's Woodward on Brique Rouge introduces house music. The change gives the first hour a firmer club focus without losing the measured pace established at the start.
Mihai Popoviciu's Travelling Without Moving on Still Hot and Lauhaus and Mario Franca's Of Historical on Whoyostro Black return to Deep House. Both records hold the first hour in a low-slung groove while moving from Popoviciu's spacious production towards the more stripped-back feel of the Lauhaus and Franca collaboration.
Vince Watson's Voodoo Disco in its Afrosoul Mix, released on Yoruba Records, introduces a rhythmic lift before Cinthie's 803 the Meme Queen on Aus Music. Shahrokh Sound Of K's Delano Smith remix of Owl Flight on Compost closes this documented section of Floating Beats with another Deep House selection.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with Ian O'Donovan's Petit Beurre remix of Stratus on When We Dip Records, bringing in Peak Time Techno. Jamie Jones and Darius Syrossian's Rushing on Defected follows with a more direct house rhythm.
Nick Curly's Plenti on Variety Music returns the hour to Deep House, keeping the groove compact and understated. Luna City Express then brings Funky House into view through Delight on Robsoul Recordings.
Steffi and Virginia's Reasons on Dolly provides a vocal-led point before Vasily Umanets's Luminous Moon on Piston Recordings returns to Deep House. Around7's The Deep Way, also released through Robsoul Recordings, follows with another Funky House cut.
Timid Boy's New Mission on New Violence Records introduces Deep Tech House before Steffi's November on Dolly and Platzdasch, Dix and Kayo Anosike's Sweeping Away on Gents & Dandy's settle back into Deep House. Mazi featuring Colette closes the documented second hour with the 2020 Vision Dub of Do You Want Me on Brique Rouge, returning the programme to house music.
