DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, event promoter, DJ agency and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the early 1990s and has developed his knowledge through decades of listening, collecting, DJing and broadcasting. His wider musical background spans House, Techno, Drum and Bass and Chillout, giving his work a broad foundation across several generations of electronic music.
Joshua began DJing during his teenage years, making mixes, collecting vinyl and becoming involved with Portugal’s developing underground scene. He also presented electronic music through local radio programmes and helped organise events with friends and fellow enthusiasts.
As rave culture expanded across Portugal, radio became increasingly important to him as a way of introducing listeners to electronic music outside the mainstream. Those early experiences later influenced the longer-form approach he developed through his own programmes.
After stepping away from regular musical activity for a period to concentrate on family life, Joshua returned to DJing and broadcasting through Floating Beats. The programme became an outlet for deeper, progressive and hypnotic electronic music, with Techno and melodic material playing important roles in its identity.
Velvety Elements developed as a complementary series centred more closely on the warmer and more soulful side of House Music. Deep House, Soulful House, Vocal House and groove-led selections give the programme its own character while retaining the careful pacing found throughout Joshua’s radio work.
Alongside broadcasting, Joshua has become increasingly active as a producer through several aliases. Each project gives him room to explore a different side of electronic music while maintaining a connection with the tastes developed through decades of collecting and DJing.
As Joshua Fernand, he concentrates primarily on contemporary Techno and more driving electronic material. Releases including Blue River on MixCult Digital and Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal through his own JFLM Recordings represent the tougher side of his studio work.
The Joshua Fernand project also reaches into deeper and more melodic territory through tracks such as Closed Door and Open Door on Radickal Records. Killer’s Plan on Rice Bowl Recordings extends that side of his catalogue towards Melodic House and Techno.
Joshua Marian carries much of his House-focused production work and connects naturally with the warmer direction of Velvety Elements. Releases including Soul Zone, Love My Soul, Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See explore deeper, soulful and groove-led House.
His K Joshua alias moves further into hypnotic and experimental electronic music. Tracks such as Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid and As You Are on Liberty Rhythm draw on Dub Techno, Ambient and deeper rhythmic structures.
Joshua also founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his productions and collaborative projects. The label gives him greater control over how new material is released while providing a dedicated home for music connected with the different sides of his studio work.
That production activity now feeds directly back into his broadcasting. Floating Beats explores deeper, progressive, hypnotic and Techno-oriented electronic music, while Velvety Elements concentrates on warmer House selections built around groove, soul and understated movement.
Together, the two programmes reflect the musical curiosity that has followed Joshua from his early years collecting records in Portugal into his current work as a DJ, producer and label owner. His approach remains centred on rhythm, melody, atmosphere and the emotional connection that carefully selected electronic music can create with the listener.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with Brame & Hamo's Dust on Feel My Bicep, establishing Melodic House and Techno before Saytek's God Botherers on Detone introduces Peak Time Techno. La Fleur's Man Power remix of Hunting Grounds, released through Power Plant Records, returns to the melodic techno edge.
Sasha's GameOvr on Watergate Records adds a firmer techno character, while Ian O'Donovan's Tribe on Einmusika Recordings restores the melodic focus. Petit Beurre's Surya on Motech Records then brings the first hour back towards peak-time techno.
Ken Ishii's Satoshi Fumi Gravity Mix of Malfunction Manipulation on Different Is Different supplies a house-informed turn before Ian O'Donovan's Blood Moon on Restructured Recordings raises the techno intensity again. Vince Watson's Bon Voyage on Everysoul gives Floating Beats a focused final passage of peak-time techno.
That first-hour sequence moves between melodic construction and more forceful club material without losing its progressive centre. The records by Brame & Hamo, Saytek, La Fleur, Sasha, Ian O'Donovan, Petit Beurre, Ken Ishii and Vince Watson give the programme its changing pace.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with Robot Love's Luc's Song on DIRTYBIRD, bringing Deep Tech House into view. Ian O'Donovan's Death on the Balcony remix of Fallen Reign on When We Dip Records follows with Organic House textures.
Antonio Del Prete's Raresh Rush remix of Summer Chords on Crossworld Records brings the selection back to House Music. Christian Burkhardt and Daniel Roth's Max Chapman remix of Get Up on Deeperfect returns the programme to Deep Tech House.
Eddie Fowlkes' That's What I Think About on Defected and Fred H's From NYC With Love on Brique Rouge hold the warmer house direction. Detlef's B3ATS remix of Music Please on Repopulate Mars introduces Tech House to the later stretch.
Vasily Umanets' Inmost on M-Sol DEEP brings in Deep House, before Alvaro AM's Messy on Whoyostro and Chad Lock's You're No Different on Groove Lovers return to Tech House. Sven Tasnadi closes Velvety Elements with Need Nobody on Voltaire Music, ending the hour with a house-rooted finish.
