The Lab Sessions present Assemble 07, the seventh episode of their programme on Scientific Sound Asia, first broadcast on Friday, 25 September 2020. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Hailing from Bogotá, Colombia, The Lab Sessions (TLS) is an artistic electronic music collective that builds connections through performances and large-scale events. Its goal is to showcase an authentic representation of Colombia's underground electronic music scene.
TLS presents its work to a diverse audience of local people and foreign visitors from a range of nationalities. The collective demonstrates that strong music can be created by Colombian artists as well as artists from abroad.
Since 2016, TLS has organised events across South America and performed in venues and clubs including Octava, Klan 31, Teatron, KAPUTT, Vagabond, Bud-X Colombia, Top Secret Medellín, Armando Records, Céntrico, Mambo Alive, Sutton and Montibus Fest. Its activity has also included Bassline events, TLS Parties, Euro Techno, Madame Garden and La Fabryka in Cali, Victoria, Masha, Vlak, Lede Club, and, most recently at the time of publication, Groove and Dirty Sanchez in Quito, Ecuador.
Guest DJ Katalina (first hour)
Our first guest DJ this week is Katalina, also known as KataDíaz, originally from Bogotá, Colombia, and currently living in Doha, Qatar. She began her DJ career two decades ago in 2000 and achieved the third position in the Pioneer DJ competition for Colombia in 2008.
House, Nu Disco, and Tech House are her primary music genres, inspired by the Disco and Rock music from the 80s and 90s during her childhood and teenage years. She enjoys collecting vinyl records and delights in spinning them on turntables whenever possible.
Having started her career performing at local venues such as The Hard Rock Cafe, she then progressed to securing residencies in the Middle East, where she has gained recognition at various establishments, including ToroToro in Abu Dhabi, UAE; Impressions Lounge in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and La Vista 55 Nightclub in Doha, Qatar.
Guest DJ Yamila Charpentier (second hour)
The second guest DJ for this week is Yamila Charpentier, who comes from Rosario, Argentina. Since childhood, she has been deeply passionate about music and received lessons in playing several instruments. As she got older, she became a member of a melodic nu-metal band.
During her time in the band, she began to draw inspiration from electronic music and subsequently delved into mastering the art of DJing. Her predominant style today is Progressive House, and she has performed alongside well-known artists at events throughout Argentina. Some of her key influences include Stan Kolev, Mia Mendi, and Nick Warren. Sit back and enjoy the performance!
The first hour, curated by Katalina, opens with a strong Afro House foundation through Reciprocity by Moon Rocket and Gold from Daniel Rateuke. These early selections establish a rhythmic, percussion-led framework before moving into Tech House with DJ Fronter’s Get Down.
House and Soulful influences follow through I’ll Be Good by Din Jay and In My Head from Davide Mazzilli. The hour continues with Funky and Jackin House via Tom Bug’s Love Wild Open, before returning to Afro House with Wrong & Right by 84bit. Deep House appears briefly through Gypsy Woman in the Kaytronik remix, rounding out a varied but controlled opening section.
The second hour, mixed by Yamila Charpentier, shifts decisively into Progressive House. Tracks such as Cubism in the Chris Cargo remix and Horus in the Subandrio remix establish a deeper, more linear progression built on long-form arrangements.
As the set develops, Progressive House remains dominant through selections like Isolation by Interaxxis and Antrim and Darkshall from EANP. Melodic House & Techno is introduced with Mesada by Marcus Meinhardt and For A Feeling from CamelPhat and Artbat, bringing the episode to a close with a consistent melodic and progressive focus.
