DJ Joshua presents the 21 September 2020 edition of Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, whose real name is Joshua Mar, is a Portuguese music lover and hoarder, a description that epitomises his character. Hailing from Évora in Portugal, electronic music is the most captivating part of his collection, from House and Drum and Bass to Chill-out and Techno.
His weekly Floating Beats show gives him space to experiment with progressive, calmer, melodic and Techno sounds. The second-hour programme, Velvety Elements, is dedicated to softer House Music with an emphasis on its more delicate elements.
He began as a disc jockey, making his first mixes in the early nineties before becoming an avid vinyl collector. He started on local radio shows, played almost every electronic genre and performed at events he planned with friends.
As his interest grew alongside Portugal's rising rave scene, he recognised radio's potential to draw in an audience. After the birth of his daughter, he stepped away from music for several years before beginning Floating Beats Sessions to satisfy his enduring love of music.
His Floating Beats podcast is broadcast on several radio stations internationally. He has this to say about his show: 'Music is an art form. Is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move ... This is a place where you hear sounds that can float and end up falling onto your body ... Enjoy it.'
In his weekly shows, Joshua explores House Music and Techno sub-genres including Deep House, Tech House, Melodic House, Detroit Techno, Soulful House, Progressive House, Techno, Vocal House and Melodic Techno. The two programmes give those interests separate settings, with Floating Beats leaning towards progressive and underground electronic music and Velvety Elements towards warmer, deeper, soulful House Music.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with Cosmic Cowboys' Notre Jour Viendra on Musik Gewinnt Freunde, establishing a Peak Time Techno edge. Ian O'Donovan's Prism on Restructured Recordings follows with raw, deep and hypnotic Techno.
Oniris' Satoshi Fumi remix of Endless Story on Stripped Recordings sustains the peak-time pressure before Petit Beurre's Varun on Motech Records takes the same direction further. Booka Shade's Lust 2.1 on Bedrock Records then introduces Melodic House and Techno to the first-hour sequence.
Budakid's No Strings Attached on Exploited changes the texture with Deep House detail. Layo & Bushwacka!'s Bushwacka! remix of Love Story on XL Recordings follows it into a warmer club setting.
Michailo's DJ Joshua remix of Grey Ghetto keeps Joshua's own work within the first-hour selection, before Frazi.er's On the Horizon on Motech Records returns to peak-time intensity. Chemistry's Underground City closes this part of the programme without interrupting its underground focus.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with 51 Days' Paper Moon on Touche, bringing Deep House into a more relaxed register. Kisk featuring Robert Owens' SCSI-9 remix of Your Face follows with a vocal-led change of pace.
Carlos Sanchez's Tibro on Dansul introduces Deep Tech House for the later stretch. Christian Burkhardt and Daniel Roth's Max Chapman remix of Get Up on Deeperfect, followed by Darius Syrossian's Alex Ranerro remix of The Renegade on VIVa MUSiC, develops that approach.
Butch and C. Vogt's Jimpster remix of Vogue on Freerange Records moves back towards Deep House. Manuel Costela and Sauco's Three Flowers then provides a further melodic point before the final selections.
Jerome Sydenham's Purple Beech on BBE Music brings House Music into the close of Velvety Elements. Ray Okpara's LORAN (FR) remix of Jazzy Sticks and David Duriez presents R Tracked's Get Up To Tha Muzik complete the hour with a direct club-minded finish.
