Many Hands, the Berlin/UK DJ duo, present Basement Soul show 26 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences in Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the project of wide-ranging DJs Jona J and Kava. Jona, whose real name is Jonathan Jefferies, was born in Barcelona and raised in Spain and the UK, where he began DJing amid the south-west England free-party and rave scene of the early 1990s.
After moving to Ibiza, Jona became absorbed in the island's Balearic sound and hedonistic culture, and has returned as both a raver and DJ. He later moved to Bristol, where the city's inner-city outlook and sound-system culture informed several years spent developing his craft.
Jona was well received within Berlin's international music community and played at venues across the city before returning to the United Kingdom earlier in 2020. His track Nocturnal, made with his longstanding friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering as Sapience, appeared on Tom Middleton's Sound Of The Cosmos label and received radio plays from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.
Originally raised in New Zealand, Kava has lived in Berlin for more than a decade. His musical grounding came through Wellington's melodic music scene, with regular exposure to Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House Music, Techno and Drum and Bass.
In New Zealand, Kava sold vinyl records and hosted shows on several radio stations. Following his move to Berlin, he was a resident on the now-defunct monthly Float Some and Jet Some show with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 on the former Berlin Community Radio, while also playing at venues across the German capital.
Jona and Kava met through a close associate near OYE Records in Berlin, and quickly recognised their musical connection. That meeting led to Many Hands and its Basement Soul sessions, an eclectic dance-focused gathering held in a Berlin basement.
Jona J and Kava work across a rhythmic and harmonic cultural spectrum. Latin Music and Afrobeat meet MPCs and drum machines, Jamaican voices in New York, West African synthesiser work and Euro-funk selections, with a playful but dancefloor-minded approach.
Many Hands' Basement Soul show 26 episode opens with the Jazz of James Clarke's Current Caption on KPM Music before Lord Echo's alternative C90 Eternal on Soundway Records Ltd. JSOUL's indie Lotus Flower leads into Ennio Morricone's soundtrack piece Cockeye's Song on Rhino Records (2), followed by BadBadNotGood's Speaking Gently and its VI : Indé / Alternatif classification on Innovative Leisure Records.
Essa's trap cut Justice on First Word Records is followed by the rock of The Turtles' I'm Chief Kamanawanalea on White Whale. Bernard Estardy's experimental Rallye du diable on Born Bad Records, Genotype's Zahozhiy-tagged Version on Exit Records, Lucid Dreams' rock track Doppelgänger on The Stone Tapes and Massive Attack's Films/Games entry Polaroid Girl on Virgin Records extend the early selection's range.
Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson's Delta Man (Where I'm Comin' From) on Arista precedes Inkswel's Electronica cut Say Goodbye (Kid Sublime Remix) on Cosmocities. Antoine Rocky-Horror's Sofia gives way to Quiroga's Indie Dance track Dabbler in Love on Really Swing Ltd.
Androo's Poly Dance track Sync Dancehall on Poly Dance Theatre introduces a more percussive stretch of the programme. Antoinette Konan's African Music selection M'ackô on Obouo Productions then meets No Smoke's Deep House track Koro Koro on Warriors Dance.
Bruise's Grand Hi on Meda Fury and Theo Parrish featuring Maurissa Rose's This Is For You on Sound Signature keep the Deep House focus in place. Altay Veloso's Nu-Disco track Débora on How Do You Are? then opens into Soma World's House Music remix Want This (Ray Mang Remix Radio Edit) on Adventures In Paradise.
Joe's Breaks track Rio Lea on Comeme is joined by Radioactive Man and Ben Pest's Old Tight Selektah on Asking For Trouble. Mr. Ho and Mogwaa's Deep House cut Bail-E on Klasse Wrecks and Aura Safari's Slow Divers (Ambient House Dub) on Hell Yeah Recordings lead towards Jus Hailu featuring Gwen Bunn's U + I.
