Bipolar Bear and co-host G Nomad feature on Scientific Sound Asia's Badaboom 09 programme. Scientific Sound Asia is an electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Badaboom 09 featured a back-to-back set from the founders of the Badaboom party concept, Bipolar Bear and G Nomad. Their selection brought together afro-deep house, global tech and cosmic disco in keeping with the spirit of their events.
Bipolar Bear, real name Stefan Paunescu, is a Romanian DJ from the small provincial city of Craiova in the south of the country. Growing up there created difficulties for the teenage Stefan, as options for buying cutting-edge music were scarce and the former Eastern Bloc, like many former USSR countries, drew much of its musical influence from MTV.
With the birth and subsequent development of the internet, the teenage Bipolar Bear could explore many different genres and watch the digital music revolution unfold. A Romanian DJ and producer with a passion for producing and playing quality music, he builds eclectic sets intended to guide an audience through the music he selects.
His aim is to spread positive energy, and he brings considerable enthusiasm to his work. After leaving Romania, he made a carving his way in Manchester's music scene as a DJ and producer, while his project Odwana combined electronic dance music with world sounds, African percussion and empowering vocals and made waves on the UK festival circuit.
At the beginning of 2019, he relocated to Da Nang, Vietnam, and set up the party brand Badaboom with fellow DJ G Nomad, aiming to raise the party scene in Central Vietnam to a new level. The Badaboom Radio Show follows the spirit of their events by sharing music with a community of like-minded people, spanning funk, soul and rare groove alongside more experimental electronic material.
For the last decade, Da Nang-based French DJ and producer G Nomad, also known as Gigimix, has worked to establish himself on the Vietnamese scene. Growing up with turntablism at heart, this natural-born digger holds an impressive collection of House, Disco, Funk, Hip-Hop, Reggae and electronic music.
Since 2012, G Nomad has played more than 1,000 shows across France, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and South Africa, and founded the Vietnam-based Banana Hustle DJ crew as well as Da Nang's Badaboom music collective. Those appearances and projects establish the international and local foundations behind his work with Badaboom.
Bipolar Bear and G Nomad's Badaboom 09 episode opens with Musta's Groovin' It on Daje Funk Records, a Disco cut, before Vince Watson's Voodoo Disco (Afrosoul Mix) on Yoruba Records brings in Deep House. Kiko Navarro's Karabali Feat Isis Apache Montero & Roque Martinez leads into Moodena's Deep Fried Funk on Tropical Disco Records, adding a Nu-Disco touch.
Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers follow with Watch Is Gone on Samosa Records, while Tilman and Will Buck's Untitled Island on Honey Butter Records returns the set to deep house. The Patchouli Brothers' Real What'chu Feel (Edit), Sunday Service Choir's That's How The Good Lord Works (Sammy J Edit), Labour Of Love's Good Feelin' and Valique's Vitamin D (V's Better Nutrition Edit) extend the record-led section.
Pat Thomas's Yamona (Detroit Swindle Remix) on Freestyle Records keeps the disco emphasis present before Valique's African Fantasy (Deeper Russia Remix) on Walk of Sound turns towards House Music. Gabrin's Zula on Great Stuff Recordings is followed by La Boa's Por Eso on Big In Japan and Bergesch's Kumyama on Obenmusik, bringing in Afro House.
Franck Biyong featuring Cristina Violle's Anywhere Trouble on Afrolectric Music Ltd. supplies an Alternative edge before Javi P3z's El Safari (Lego Edit). Orchestre Poly Rythmo De Cotonou and Bosq's Djanfa Magni (Bosq A Afro Disco Mix) on Sol Power Sound brings in Indie Dance, with Hotmood's 3-2 Clave on Legofunk Records following it.
Lego Edit's Indigenous To Mars (Lego Voyager Dub) and Igor Gonya's Kitchen Ninja (Master) make room for Jad & The's Matano Trumpet Jam on SlothBoogie. Penya and Msafiri Zawose's Heyyeh (Tom Blip Remix) on On The Corner Records precedes Bahramji and Medusa Odyssey's Jana on Exotic Refreshment, a Melodic House and Techno selection.
JKriv's Lovin' Lasers on Razor-N-Tape brings the programme back to disco before Evan Michael's Ancient Times on Airdrop Records. Demuja closes with Come Back and Dance on MUJA, ending the set on house-focused dancefloor material.
