DJ Joshua presents the Floating Beats and Velvety Elements tracklists for this 6 July 2020 edition on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter, DJ agency and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
DJ Joshua, real name Joshua Mar, is a lifelong music collector from Évora, Portugal. His passion for electronic music has shaped his artistic identity through decades spent exploring styles from House and Techno to Drum and Bass, Chillout and beyond.
Floating Beats, his long-running weekly programme, provides a space for Joshua to explore progressive, melodic and atmospheric electronic music. He later launched a second hour, Velvety Elements, dedicated to the softer, deeper and more soulful side of house music.
Joshua began DJing and creating mixes in the early nineties, becoming an enthusiastic vinyl collector and a familiar voice on local radio. He performed at House and Techno events organised with friends while Portugal’s rave culture grew, using radio to reach wider audiences and share the music he loved.
After the birth of his daughter, Joshua stepped away from the scene for several years. On his return, he created Floating Beats Sessions, reconnecting with listeners worldwide and re-establishing his place in the global underground community.
Joshua describes his philosophy simply: “Music is an art form. It is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a place where you hear sounds that float and fall onto your body, enjoy it.”
Each week, Joshua presents House and Techno sub-genres, frequently featuring Deep House, Tech House, Melodic House, Detroit House, Soulful House, Progressive House, Vocal House, Melodic Techno and Techno. His shows are broadcast internationally across multiple online radio platforms devoted to House and Techno culture.
In the first hour, Floating Beats opens with Devv’s Current State on Blind Vision Records, establishing a Deep Tech House foundation before Gorge’s Depth of Silence on Still Hot introduces Tech House pressure. Jorge Caiado’s Mad Chords follows, keeping the opening sequence focused on percussion and groove.
Ben Sterling’s Surrender on Hot Creations sharpens the club-focused feel, while Antranig’s Ride It Out on Sondos brings in House Music energy. David Museen and Erik Christiansen’s Stereotypes then leads into the tighter drum work of Charlie Banks’ Project X on MicroHertz.
iO (Mulen) follows with Double Cable on Infuse, extending the deep-tech emphasis with a stripped-back rhythmic approach. Sandrinha’s Dirty Mind on Far Down Records adds a house-led lift before Neverdogs’ Underground Activity on Bamboleo returns to a more reduced groove.
Hector Couto closes the Floating Beats hour with Shut the F. Up from Stereo Productions Catalog. Its Tech House framework gives the first programme a firm, percussive finish.
In the second hour, Velvety Elements begins with Frag Maddin’s Stuhltanz on STRCTR and Mancini’s The Mermaid’s Sound on MNCN. Their house and deep-tech combinations establish the warmer, more intimate character of the programme.
Johnny Da Cruz’s Forteba remix of It’s All About on Deep Site Digital brings in Deep House detail. Ridney’s Ehpp, in Spiritchaser’s Spirit Level Mix on Guess Records, sustains that deeper direction with a soulful edge.
Coeo’s Kreature remix of Physical on Colour In Music keeps the low-slung feel in place before Strobelight Shadow’s 2012 on Tsuba adds a Tech House turn. AtLows then supplies Funky House motion through How Do I Get to Detroit on Souluxe Record Co.
Forteba’s Jetfinder on Plastic City returns to Deep House, followed by Franck Roger and Mandel Turner’s Carlo Gambino remix of After All on Real Tone Records. Hideo Kobayashi’s No Nothing on Fuente Music closes Velvety Elements with a Tech House record that balances the hour’s deeper mood with a direct rhythmic finish.
