Bicycle Corporation presents Roots 042 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and DJ agency that also operates as a music-news platform, connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian partnership of DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. The production duo has released more than 50 tracks and remixes across House Music, Techno, Tech House and Deep House, among other electronic styles.
In the early 1990s, Marco began his musical path as a DJ and producer. After his debut, he established events across Italy through the Urban People collective.
This work brought him wider recognition and a residency at Pacha in Egypt, leading to international DJ bookings. It also took him on a musical path around the world.
Growing up in Torino, Italy, Stefano showed musical talent from a young age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums with fervour, admiring Chopin's compositions and the tribal rhythms of West African djembes.
For the teenage Stefano, the sight of a DJ performing on stage became increasingly compelling. He wondered whether the electronic beats rarely heard on 1990s Italian radio would open a new chapter in his life, eventually leading to his meeting with Marco and the formation of Bicycle Corporation.
The tracklist below outlines the roots of Bicycle Corporation's sound and the genres that have influenced their electronic releases. These include Funk, Disco, Soul, Afrobeat, Electro, Rare Groove, Hip Hop and Afrocentric music, while Bicycle Corporation is available for booking via our DJ agency for Asia.
Originally broadcast on Sunday 5 July 2020, this edition brings together records from several decades and settings. Its edits sit alongside original recordings, showing how the duo connect established material with their own programming approach.
Bicycle Corporation's Roots 042 episode opens with The Smiths' Money Changes Everything and The Style Council's Mick's Company, two Rock selections associated with Rhino/Warner Records and UMC respectively. Baden Powell's Blues A Volontè then introduces a Brazilian accent through the TOV Productions release.
Bunny Mack's Supafrico (Dub), released by RCA, brings Afrobeat into the early section. Booker T & The MG's' Green Onions adds instrumental Funk, while Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass follow with the Jazz Music of A Taste Of Honey on Herb Alpert Presents.
Gloria Jones' Tainted Love carries a Soul and R&B vocal presence before Bobby Byrd's Hot Pants (I'm Coming, I'm Coming, I'm Coming) raises the intensity. James Brown's Make It Funky Pt.1 on Universal Records reinforces the Funk direction, before The Champs' Tequila on ISIS Sarl returns to rock and instrumental interplay.
The International Studio Orchestra's Pancho leads into Jorge Ben Jor's Oba, La Vem Ela, with the latter appearing through UME - Global Clearing House. Nazaré Pereira's Matutinho, Milton Nascimento's A De O and Flora Purim and Airto Moreira's Crianças Das Ondas deepen the Brazilian passage before Sergio Mendes' Mozambique on Craft Recordings introduces Latin Music and Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77's Pomba Gira on A&M returns to Jazz Music.
Amadou Mariam's Bara (Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm Dance) gives way to Ben E King's Supernatural Thang (BC Edit), extending the programme's interest in reworked material. The Pool's Jamaica Running on Compost introduces Indie Dance, then The Alan Parsons Project's The Gold Bug on Arista/Legacy meets Loleatta Holloway's Catch Me On The Rebound on Salsoul Records and its Dance Music setting.
LF SYSTEM's Bourgie Bourgie on Roux Records brings the selection back towards club music, while HP Vince's Just Think on Chopshop supplies a Nu-Disco finish to the penultimate stretch. G. Markus closes Roots 042 with Toxic Masculinity Must Die on Sundries, ending the programme in Disco territory.
