Bicycle Corporation present Roots episode 039 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a playlist drawn from the records that have informed their sound. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across the region and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian collaboration between DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. The pair have released more than 50 tracks across House and Techno subgenres including Melodic, Deep, Tech and French styles.
Marco began his career in the early 1990s as part of the crew behind events including Urban People. His work in Italy brought wider recognition and, in time, international bookings.
Stefano grew up in Torino, Italy, and showed an early interest in music. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, and developed an appreciation for Chopin and West African djembe.
Although he was devoted to many forms of music, Stefano was especially drawn to DJ culture as a teenager. The records and beats that interested him were rarely heard on Italian radio at the time.
Playing those sounds to large audiences initially seemed remote, yet Stefano pursued that ambition through hard work and dedication. That commitment eventually helped bring Bicycle Corporation into being.
Marco and Stefano have revisited material from their earlier catalogue and created a Bandcamp page to distribute it. The archive makes these earlier tracks available alongside the duo's broader body of work.
The playlist represents the roots of their sound and the influences that inform their electronic releases, including Funk, Disco, Soul, Afrobeat, Electro, Rare Groove, Hip Hop and Afrocentric music. Bicycle Corporation is available for booking via our DJ agency for Asia.
Bicycle Corporation's Roots episode 039 with Sylvester and Fela Kuti opens with Sylvester's Do You Wanna Funk in the BC Edit, followed by Fela Kuti, Bruno Flores and Renzo Zong's 2000 Blacks Edit. Chaka Khan featuring Fatback Band's Are Your Ready To The Vocal? then brings another vocal-led selection into the opening run.
Mayfield's Kungfu in the Retroclub Edit and Jonh Ozila's Funky Boogie extend the early rhythmic focus. Jamie 3:26's sTop leads into Tony Orlando's Pete Herbert edit of Don't Let Go, released on Disco Deviance.
Sister Sledge's Thinking Of You in the Hot Gorilla Edit brings a House Music reading to the programme through Atlantic. Cerrone's Sweet Drums, issued through Malligator Productions and Because Music, follows with Nu-Disco character.
James Brown's People Get Up And Drive Your Funky Soul returns the selection to its original-era soul and funk foundations. Fela Kuti's Frustration, released by Knitting Factory Records, follows with the Afrobeat context central to the original recording.
Gilberto Gil's Maracatu Atômico in the Greg Wilson Edit introduces Brazilian-inflected rhythm before Amin Peck's Coda on iM EDM. Airto Moreira's Toque De Cuica, released through WM Brazil, brings Brazilian percussion and Jazz Music elements into the later section.
T-Connection's Do What You Wanna Do in the Moplen Edit, from High Fashion Music, sets up the final run with its dancefloor focus. Dasco's African Power on Local Talk, CJ & Co's We Got Out Own Thing in the Mighty Mouse Dub Edit, and Isaac Hayes' Decimo edit of Theme From Shaft close the episode through edits of disco, soul and funk material.
