Niko Power and Bafode feature in Scientific Sound Asia Podcast 121, a guest show first broadcast on 27 May 2020. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Niko Power and Bafode were the guests for this edition. Niko Power is a self-taught musician and percussionist whose instrumental influences come from West Africa and Brazil, and he is also an avid vinyl collector and DJ.
He began his DJ sessions with Jamaican music, including Selecta, Reggae and Dancehall. Over the years, he gravitated towards electronic music through mash-ups, remixes and re-edits inspired by many producers and DJs.
Multi-instrumentalist Bafode draws energy and inspiration from a colourful musical niche. Informed by the many currents and styles of Black Music, particularly the glorious 1970s, he fuses several styles as a musical chameleon.
The Niko Power and Bafode guest show podcast 121 opens with Blackout Ja’s Introduction, a Dancehall cut on Shockers Records, before Creaky Jackals’ I’m Crazy featuring Sarah De Warren brings Dance-pop from Otodayo Sūpa. O.B.F’s Soundman Session, featuring Charlie P, Mr Williamz and Sr Wilson, follows with Reggae on Dubquake Records.
Defunk’s Bye Bye Bird introduces Breaks through High Chai, while Dephicit’s Sleng Teng Strut brings Glitch Hop from Ghetto Funk. The Chemical Brothers’ We’ve Got To Try, released by EMI, returns to Breaks with a different rhythmic focus.
The Furmigadub remix of Samba De Coco Raízes De Arcoverde’s A Sereia leads into Aricia Mess and Lucio K’s Meu Bem Bem, followed by Baja Frequencia’s Supersan remix of Colombia featuring La Perla. Kenny Knots’ Way Up Deh then brings the selection back to Reggae through Boom Sound.
Charlie Beale and Grid Division’s Stick Em’ Up on Symphonic Distribution begins a sustained Breaks passage. Stickybuds’ Ahee remix of 99% featuring Rubi Dan, Nynfus Corporation’s This Weed and Omegaman’s DJ Maars remix of Happy Ending Whisper Song add releases from Westwood Recordings, Breakbeat Paradise Recordings and Fort Knox Recordings.
Mista Savona’s Opiuo remix of Carnival brings Reggae back into the sequence before Hiphoppapotamus and Father Funk’s What Ray’d Say. L’Entourloop’s Le Rendez Vous featuring Tippa Irie and N’Zeng brings Bass / Club pressure via X-Ray Production, while Cali B’s Side on East Side Records returns to Reggae.
Kibosh’s Blowin’ That Sound on Breakbeat Paradise Recordings and Lack Jemmon’s Joan Jett featuring Kurnel MC keep the Breaks section active. L Plus’ Red Planet and Tantrum Desire’s Human Mind, both on Technique Recordings, turn towards Drum and Bass.
Ed Solo and MC Spyda’s Soundsystem Entertainer on Jungle Cakes precedes R3HAB and Deorro’s Flashlight, a Mainstage release on SPINNIN’ RECORDS. Filip Motovunski’s Sound Of Da Police on JungleXpeditions leads into Tantrum Desire’s Feeling Good and Nanana’s Youthstar featuring Deluxe for the final stretch.
