Bipolar Bear and guest Jarod ESC present the playlist for Badaboom 07 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka, as well as internationally.
This edition features a back-to-back set from Badaboom's Bipolar Bear and guest Jarod ESC. Bipolar Bear, whose real name is Stefan Paunescu, is a Romanian DJ from the southern provincial city of Craiova.
Growing up in a small city presented difficulties for the teenage Stefan, as options for buying cutting-edge music were scarce. As part of the former Eastern Bloc, Romania drew much of its musical influence from MTV, as did many former USSR countries.
The arrival and development of the internet gave the teenage Bipolar Bear access to a wide range of genres as digital music developed. With a passion for producing and playing quality music, the Romanian DJ and producer builds eclectic sets intended to guide listeners through his selections.
His aim is to spread positive energy, and his enthusiasm is evident in his approach to DJing. After leaving Romania on furlough, he began carving his way through Manchester's music scene as a DJ and producer.
His project Odwana combined electronic dance music with world sounds, African percussion and empowering vocals, gaining attention on the UK festival circuit. That project marked the beginning of a new direction for his work.
At the beginning of 2019, he relocated to Da Nang, Vietnam, and set up the party brand Badaboom with fellow DJ G Nomad. Their intention was to raise the profile of the party scene in Central Vietnam.
The Badaboom Radio Show follows the spirit of its events by sharing music with a community of like-minded people. Its selections range from Funk, Soul and Rare Groove to more experimental electronic music.
This edition welcomes Hong Kong's Jarod ESC, known as the main figure behind Escaped Records and a later addition to the Central Vietnam scene. Born in Paris and raised on music, Joseph Lebon, also known as Jarod Escaped, spent ten years playing and collaborating internationally with disco, house and funk selections.
Since 2018, he had lived in Hong Kong, where he collaborated and played with Fauve Radio, Mihn Club and Shi Fu Mitz Festival. After settling in Hoi An, he launched Jarod ESC and was due to headline the next Badaboom party on Saturday 30 May alongside artists from the region.
Bipolar Bear and Jarod ESC's Badaboom 07 episode opens with Márta Sebestyén's Vetettem Violát in the Mom Re-Edit, before Los Indígenas bring Sangre Goajira in Dandara's edit. The latter is a Downtempo release on Drosssel, while Polo & Pan's Nanã introduces Electronica through Universal Music Division Virgin Records Distribution Deal.
Niyaz's Love And The Veil appears in the Bété Re-Edit, followed by Shimshai & Tina Malia's Nikosh edit of Hey Amba. Folk Lore's Sambacumba in the Ohxalá Edit and Compress's Rasta La Vista keep the early selections centred on a sequence of reworked recordings.
Ibrahim Maalouf's Hashish in the DJ Kobayashi Edit is followed by Cheb Khaled's Blood Internet rework of Alech Taadi. Captain Planet's Cicada, issued by Bastard Jazz Recordings, brings in Electronica before Ali Farka Toure's Mula edit of Ai Bine and Kleintierschaukel's Kidz Of Tibet featuring Badau on Akumandra.
K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade's Tom Excell remix of Sahara on Pura Vida Sounds brings an Afro House turn to the set. Marvin Gaye's DJ Snatch rework of I Want You then leads into LeonxLeon's Rokanbo, a Breaks track released through Cracki Records.
A Vision Of Panorama contribute Barbados, a Mellophonia release, followed by their track Two Birds. Unknown Edit's Halki and Medlaks' Young Marco rework of Jikovovununu precede Faze Action's Mangwana, an Indie Dance record on Faze Action Records.
The Sunburst Band's Put A Lyric In It on Z Records sets up Ten Ven's Just About, a House Music release on Positiva. Manic's Standing Right Here featuring Dina Vass brings the programme to its final vocal-led selection.
