Ezmun presents Cooking With Gas 02, featuring guest DJ Chacona, on Scientific Sound Asia following its announcement for 3 May 2020. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting listeners in Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and across Asia.
Cooking With Gas is a weekly programme of percussive, groovy and dark selections curated by Ezmun. This 90-minute edition focuses on the jittery roll of leftfield bass, with its final 30 minutes given to a guest mix from Manchester-based producer Chacona.
Chacona and Ezmun have collaborated for years in bands, electronic production and behind the decks. His 30-minute contribution draws on an encyclopaedic knowledge of club music, bringing 130 BPM breaks, bass and atmosphere alongside a preview of one of his forthcoming releases.
Originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom, Ezmun relocated to Vietnam to develop his ambitions as a DJ and producer. The Covid-19 pandemic then forced a temporary move to Melbourne, from where he released a weekly programme of his favourite sounds.
Like many DJs, Ezmun began in his bedroom before progressing to house parties with close friends and cohorts. By 2019, he had made his way into clubs, playing venues in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City.
Ezmun is drawn to the dark, sparse atmosphere of minimal half-time 140s and the forceful clatter of percussive leftfield bass. He uses these elements as peaks and troughs within an energetic techno setting.
As he developed his craft, Ezmun moved from playing for friends to appearing at local venues and building recognition in Vietnam's underground. At the time of publication, this recognition led to an invitation to join the station, with a future place on the DJ agency also anticipated.
Ezmun's Cooking With Gas 02 with Chacona opens with Lurka's Bodied and Minor Science's Volumes, both on Wisdom Teeth and Whities respectively. Yak's Don Greeno follows before Ploy's Footprints In Solid Rock and Batu's Shiratani bring the set into Bass / Club territory through Timedance.
Kowton's Pea Soup on Livity Sound Recordings returns to the fractured rhythm of Breaks, before TSVI's The Healer and Lokane's Bomba land on Nervous Horizon. Upsammy's Shaky Limbs, released by Die Orakel, introduces a taut Peak Time Techno edge.
Peverlist's Salt Water gives way to Pearson Sound's XLB, whose self-released cut brings in UK Garage textures. Hypho's Oh's and Zee's restores a breaks emphasis, while Mumdance's Rinse release The Sprawl adds a more abstract Electronica passage.
Tenebre's Jungle Frontier on WNCL Recordings sharpens the pressure again, followed by Silas & Snare's Kaizen release Whistle Blower. Metrist's Loftstrom leads into Tessela's Nancy's Pantry on R&S Records, where the programme settles into direct Techno.
Sango's The Differences on Heavenly Sweetness introduces a brief Hip Hop change of pace, followed by Nuvaman's Pyrex. DJ Swisha's self-released Shake N Bounce turns towards Electro, while Cocktail Party Effect's Donkey Fight on Fox & Hound Recordings returns to UK Garage.
Soundbwoy Killah's Dansu Discs cut Fuck Off and Dance restores the breakbeat energy before DJ Deller's Romantic on PURE MUSIC MANAGEMENT and Yaleesa Hall's Zoe Price on Will & Ink carry the later section forward. 2 Bad Mice close the listed selections with 2 Bad Mice on Moving Shadow and a touch of Drum and Bass, before Chacona's Look Around the Room provides the guest mix's final record.
