Many Hands present Basement Soul show 17 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Many Hands is the intellectual property of Jona J and Kava, two DJs with wide-ranging musical interests. Jona Jefferies was conceived in Barcelona and raised between Spain and the UK, beginning his DJ career in the free-party and rave scene of south-west England in the early 1990s.
After relocating to Ibiza, Jona was drawn to the island's Balearic sound and hedonistic culture, and has since returned as both raver and DJ. Following his time in Ibiza, he made tracks in Bass City, Bristol, where inner-city perspectives and sound-system culture shaped his work over several years.
Jona was well received within Berlin's growing international music community before carrying out his trade at venues across the city, then returning to the United Kingdom earlier that year. His release Nocturnal, made with longstanding friend Lewis Hopkin of Stardelta Mastering as Sapience for Tom Middleton's Sound Of The Cosmos label, received radio plays from Gilles Peterson, Mala and Laurent Garnier.
Originally raised as a Kiwi, Kava has lived in Berlin, his adopted home, for a decade. His musical endeavours began in Wellington's melodic music scene, where Soul, Bashment, Hip Hop, Disco, House, Techno and Drum and Bass were frequent influences.
In New Zealand, Kava sold vinyl records and hosted radio shows on several stations. After moving to Berlin, he was a resident on the now-defunct monthly Berlin Community Radio programme Float Some and Jet Some with Rodi Kirk of Scratch 22 fame, as well as performing his art at venues across the German capital.
Jona and Kava met through a close ally near OYE Records in Berlin and quickly recognised their musical connection. That meeting led to Many Hands and its eclectic, dance-focused basement sessions in the heart of Berlin, from which Basement Soul takes its name.
Jona J and Kava work across the rhythmic and harmonic cultural spectrum. Disco, Soul, Latin Music and Afrobeat meet MPCs, drum machines, Jamaicans in New York, West African synthesiser music and funky Euro-freak sounds, with a focus on dancers.
Many Hands' Basement Soul show 17 with Many Hands opens with Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes' Peace & Love before Children Of Zeus featuring LayFullStop bring Fear Of A Flat Planet from Material Music Curates into Electronica territory. Quasimodo's instrumental Boom Music follows, while Space Ghost's instrumental I'll Be Yours keeps the early selections concise and rhythm-led.
System Olympia featuring P Nut's Falling In Love, issued through Okay Nature, brings in Rap/Hip Hop before Apiento's AS on Rhythm Section International returns to Electronica. Linkwood and Greg Foat's Es Vedra on Athens Of The North then introduces House Music, joined by Julien Dyne featuring Mara TK's Steady on Soundway Records.
Esnard Boisdur's Mizik Bel on Favorite Recordings adds Zouk, followed by Nordine Steifi's Zine Ezzinet and Babylon Is Falling's Tom Bolas Edit. Deli Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra's Too Much Information (Rainy City Version) leads into Jad & The's Deep Dark Grimey Dancefloor Moment on Rhythm Section International, bringing the set towards Deep House.
Deetron featuring Ovasoul7's I Cling (Yoruba Soul Version) precedes Minos Pour Main Basse (Sur La Ville)'s Le Patron Est Devenu Fou!, released on Disques Solid. The latter supplies a Downtempo passage before Glen Davis's Namida (Tears Of Happiness) (Africanz On Marz Dub) changes the texture again.
Huerta's Mandala and Shokazulu's Fresh Fromage return the programme to club-focused material before Brothers Davis' Billy Mac Attack on Black Pegasus. That record gives way to Disco, then Humble B Flat's Three Sounds on Pond Life Records brings a lighter Nu-Disco finish into view.
Mudeg Endmix's Vicious sits between Brothers Davis and Humble B Flat in the closing run. Aisha's The Creator on Ariwa ends the show with Bass / Club energy, completing the programme's movement from early instrumental cuts through house, Zouk and late-night dancefloor material.
