Bicycle Corporation presents episode 30 of Roots featuring Singapore guest DJ Brendon P on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian DJ and producer partnership of Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, who is also known as 6884. Their productions span Deep House, Tech House, French House and Techno, drawing on the pair’s broad experience as DJs and musicians.
Marco began his career in the early 1990s, leading house music and techno events under the name Urban People. His work built recognition in Italy before leading to bookings around the world.
Marco is based in Taipei and works across a wider South East Asian network. He is available for bookings through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency and broadcasts weekly on its radio station.
Born in Torino, Italy, Stefano showed a strong interest in music from an early age and devoted much of his free time to it. Formal study developed his skills in classical piano, percussion and drums.
His listening moved from Chopin’s compositions to the rhythms of the West African djembe, demonstrating wide musical interests. During his teenage years in the 1990s, he was especially drawn to DJ culture and the rhythmic records that were still rarely heard on Italian radio.
Performance before large audiences was an ambition Stefano pursued with determination and sustained effort. That commitment led him and Marco to establish Bicycle Corporation.
Marco and Stefano have revisited their earlier tracks and made them available through a Bandcamp page. Their Roots programme has featured DJs and producers from Asia’s electronic music scene while presenting records from a wide range of styles.
Guest DJ Brendon P
Brendon Perera, professionally known as DJ Brendon P, is from Singapore and has more than four decades of experience as a disc jockey. His approach to music and clubs has been shaped by a modest, lo-fi ethos since beginning in Singapore’s mobile DJ circuit in 1980 and moving into club work a year later.
A 1984 trip to New York City proved important to his musical development. Visits to the Funhouse, Paradise Garage, Dancetaria and the Area immersed him in a club culture that helped establish the foundations of house music.
Brendon P has played an expansive range of musical styles in Singapore and internationally. Over time, his interest in dance music broadened into a repertoire covering many genres.
His principal styles include House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge and Electronica. During the 1980s, groups such as Juliana’s and Bacchus gave him opportunities to perform locally and internationally.
In the 1990s, he held residencies at Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX. These roles preceded a nine-year residency at Singapore’s Zouk Club, running from July 2001 until May 2009.
He later completed a two-year residency at Kyo. At the time of publication, he was a resident DJ at the Swanky CE LA VI Rooftop Club & Skybar at Marina Bay Sands, where he played a diverse musical repertoire.
At the time of publication, Brendon was active in local and international club scenes and performed in cities worldwide. His appearances included Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taiwan, Hanoi and Hong Kong.
Alongside his DJ work, Brendon is a prolific producer with original tracks and remixes issued through a varied group of labels. These include In The Woods in the USA, Los Grandes in Spain, Reversoulmusic in the USA, Audio Parallax in the UK, Hotbox Music in the USA, Soul Shift in the USA, Defected in the UK, Rawjak and Eclesia in Singapore, Issys Groove in the UK, Love International in Malaysia, and One With Music in Singapore.
He also performed at New York’s Cielo Club before the venue closed. Nicolas Mattar, the owner of Cielo and Output, described Brendon P as a ‘taste master’ and one of the area’s leading DJs.
That recognition is associated with Brendon’s commitment to his musical style, detailed programming and sophisticated set construction. His ability to move across diverse musical genres brings together elements from different periods without losing the character of the individual records.
Bicycle Corporation’s Roots 30 with guest Brendon P opens with Smith & Mudd featuring Quinn Lamont Luke’s The Distance, an Electro selection from Adventures In Paradise with serene tones and a relaxed Balearic mood. The VU’s Femme Totale (V’s Hippie Dance Edit) adds a groovier edge before Arthur’s Landing’s Love Dancing brings the programme into Electronica through Strut.
Son of Sound’s Say More and Lonely C’s True (FSQ Caribbean Disco Remix) sit around Aït Meslayene’s El Fen (Stefano Ritteri Versione Spaziale). The latter, released through Spaziale Recordings, introduces the programme’s confirmed Folk element before the selection returns to club-focused material.
Massimo Vanoni’s Move To The Rhythm (Rhythm Mix) on Prison Entertainment establishes the Nu-Disco thread. Original Disco Thing featuring Nicole Simone’s A Love Divine and Parisian Soul’s Temple Of Disco on Denote hold that feel before Lay-Far’s If Only the Time brings Deep House from Lazy Days Music into the mix.
Noil Rago’s Stop follows Lay-Far, while The Phenomenal Handclap Band’s Remain Silent (Ray Mang Extended Mix) on Toy Tonics gives the middle passage a firm Disco character. Louie Vega, Leroy Burgess, The Universal Robot Band and Patrick Adams’ Barely Breaking Even (Louie Vega Boogie Mix), then DJ Laurel’s Hi Jack, sustain the soulful, funk-rooted direction.
The Vision featuring Andreya Triana’s Heaven (Mousse T.’s E-Funk Extended Mix) appears through Defected Records and marks the arrival of House Music. UC Beatz’s Exotic Fruitz on Masterworks Music returns to Deep House, while Art Of Tones’ So Sweet on Basics Recordings retains the house pulse.
Ozgood and Sad Ali’s No Couture (FSQ A Perfect 10 Remix), issued through Soul Clap Records, keeps the closing stretch centred on House Music. The Vision featuring Andreya Triana closes with Mountains (Extended Mix), ending Brendon P’s contribution with a poised return to the programme’s warm dancefloor focus.
