DJ Joshua presents Floating Beats 424 on Scientific Sound Asia, bringing his Portuguese underground electronic music background to the programme. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Originally from Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua is a committed music lover and collector whose interest in electronic dance music spans House, Drum and Bass, Chillout and Techno. Techno is among his strongest influences, while his selections draw on a broad range of electronic styles.
During the early 1990s, Joshua began developing his craft by assembling his first mixes on his decks and building an extensive vinyl collection. He also collaborated on local radio shows, exploring electronic music through Acid House, Progressive House and the rising Detroit Techno sound.
With friends, he organised House Music and Techno events, contributing to Portugal’s developing rave culture at the time. Those activities placed him within a growing electronic music community as well as behind the decks.
A series of life-changing events later led to a temporary break from performing, although his commitment to DJing endured. He returned to the decks a few years later and revived that focus through the Floating Beats Sessions podcast.
The podcast gained international attention through mixes broadcast on prominent House Music and Techno radio stations around the world. Its selections range through deeper House, Tech House, Melodic House and Techno, reaching listeners drawn to energetic electronic music.
Joshua describes his approach in the following terms: “Music is an art form, a fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move. This is a space where you can hear sounds that float and ultimately resonate within you.” He believes each track can offer a distinct emotional experience and shape the atmosphere on a dance floor.
At the time of this programme’s launch, his weekly selections covered House and Techno in forms including deeper, melodic, Detroit, soulful, progressive and vocal House, alongside melodic Techno. Each edition was built around lush melodies and rhythmic movement associated with electronic dance music.
Floating Beats places Joshua’s taste for pulsating rhythms and detailed electronic production in a weekly radio format. The show also documents the deep and tech-focused direction that shaped its earlier editions before it later moved towards heavier Techno sounds.
Floating Beats 424 opens with Joseph Ashworth’s Laminated on Life And Death and Leonardo Gonnelli with Adne’s Work It on Play It Say It, establishing a firm Tech House foundation. Danny Howells follows with Mallets on Variety Music, introducing a more atmospheric Melodic House and Techno shade.
James Dexter’s Audio Slave on Noexcuse Records then moves into Deep Tech House, before Gorge’s Beyond Flatlines on Still Hot settles into deeper territory. Luca Bisori’s Sun In My Voice on Ocean Trax brings in House Music, while Johnny D’s Ellic on 8Bit restores the tighter tech-house rhythm.
Delano Smith’s They’re Coming on Mixmode Recordings sustains the House current before Mara’s 1974 on Choo Choo Records alters the mood. Sascha Sonido’s Uh Mamacita on Sea Of Sand brings the pressure back into Tech House, followed by MANIK (NYC) with Flex on Vibe Me To The Moon.
Fauvrelle begins the later passage with U Say on In Flagrante Music, and dPop with Backsvart follow through the Mihai Popoviciu remix of Acedia on Seaweed Records. Toni Varga’s Green Lobster on Cr2 Records and Lex Loofah’s Kerb Crawler on Yousel Records shift between House Music and brisk Tech House.
Special Case’s My Yummy on Leftroom Records and Chris Carrier’s Lota Draconis on Adult Only keep the rhythm stripped back and club-focused. AJ Sent’s Eat Your Words on Kaos Records leads into a deeper Minimal Tech influence through Oscar Poulsen’s Brain Delay on Low Groove Records.
James Dexter and Frink’s Gone on Wizz Music holds the deep-tech focus before Mihai Popoviciu’s Lotus, in the Peter Makto and Gregory S remix for Truesounds Music, returns to Deep House. Gorge closes with Jyoti on Future Soundz Bundles, ending the programme with the smooth deeper House finish that characterised Floating Beats’ early period.
