Bicycle Corporation presents Roots episode 25, the duo’s final programme of 2019, on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences in Malaysia, China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea and across the wider region.
Bicycle Corporation is the electronic collaboration between Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Together, they have released more than 50 tracks and remixes spanning French House and Techno.
Marco began his DJ career in the early 1990s and established House Music and Techno events in Italy under the name Urban People. That work brought recognition, a residency at Pacha in Egypt and international DJ bookings.
Stefano grew up in Torino, Italy, and showed musical ability from an early age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, with particular interest in Chopin’s work and West African djembes.
As a teenager, Stefano became increasingly drawn to the image of a DJ playing records. The electronic beats that were difficult to find on Italian radio during the 1990s opened a new chapter in his life.
Roots explores the musical influences behind Bicycle Corporation’s electronic releases, including Funk, Disco, Soul, Afrobeat, Electro, Rare Groove, Hip Hop and Afrocentric sounds. Bicycle Corporation are available for booking through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency in Asia.
Bicycle Corporation’s Roots episode 25 final show opens with Aqua Marine’s Santana (Deepspirits Edit), Carlos Santana’s Banbeye and Earth Wind & Fire’s Drum Song (Edit). Dom Um Romão’s Amor En Jacuma, issued by Original Jazz Classics, introduces Brazilian jazz and Jazz Music to the opening stretch.
Femi Kuti’s Sorry Sorry (Old School Afro Dub) on Universal Music Division Barclay brings Afrobeat into the programme before Candido’s Jingo (Remix Feat. Afla Sackey) arrives via Salsoul Records. T-Connection’s Do What You Wanna Do (Moplen Remix) on High Fashion Music then leads into Tom Browne’s jazz-funk Fungi Mama, released by Arista.
The Fatback Band’s (Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop (Joey Negro London Bus Stop Mix) on Z Records brings Nu-Disco energy, followed by Candido’s Dancin’ & Prancin’ [The Reflex Revision]. The latter gives the middle of the set a Dance Music lift before The Brothers Johnson’s Stomp (Carl Reidy House Edit) and Patrick Cowley’s Primitive World extend the edit-led selection.
Peter Godwin’s Emotional Disguise, from UMC (Universal Music Catalogue), adds a pop turn before the unidentified Tropical Jam changes the pace. Sivuca’s Ain’t No Sunshine (Edit) on London Records brings a Latin jazz groove into the sequence, while Liquid Liquid’s Cavern (Alan Dixon DJ Edit) follows.
Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache, issued by Mr Bongo, sets up Instant Funk’s I Got My Mind Made Up (Late Nite Tuff Guy Remix) on Ultra. Hamilton Bohannon’s The Groove Machine / The Boogie Train, released by Mercury, returns the selection to funk before Dr Packer’s Street Player keeps the rhythm moving.
In Flagranti’s Freakin’ Time on Street Meat and Dasco’s African Power on Local Talk bring the final section back towards disco and house-inflected club material. Astrud Gilberto’s Brasilera Doc and Ames Con Hielo Band’s Poco close this 29 December edition with the Brazilian rhythms, jazz fusion, funk, Afrobeat and disco elements that shaped its end-of-year selection.
