Bicycle Corporation announce guest DJ Louis Chen for second show

Bicycle Corporation present Roots 21 on Scientific Sound Asia, with Taipei DJ Louis Chen featured as the guest for this second show. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.

Bicycle Corporation is the Italian partnership of DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. United by making and performing music, the pair have released more than 50 original tracks and remixes for audiences around the world.

Their work brings different styles and influences into a shared electronic approach, with House and Techno central to their output. The project developed through Marco and Stefano’s collaboration and their interest in exploring new musical ideas.

In the early 1990s, Marco followed his interest in music through DJing and production. He also organised and hosted the Urban People events across Italy to bring together music lovers from different backgrounds.

His work earned recognition in the music industry and led to a residency at Pacha in Egypt. The residency raised his local profile and brought international DJ bookings.

Stefano, who is from Torino, Italy, developed his musical ability early in life. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, each of which became part of his musical foundation.

He spent considerable time developing his technique and studying musical composition. Among the influences that informed his artistic path, Chopin’s work held particular importance.

Stefano also connected with the rhythms of West African djembes and their cultural heritage. Their complex percussion informed his creativity and added another dimension to his musical repertoire.

As a young man, Stefano became increasingly fascinated by DJs performing on stage and engaging a crowd. Electronic beats were rarely heard on Italian radio during the 1990s, and his eventual meeting with Marco led to the formation of Bicycle Corporation.

DJ Louis, whose real name is Louis Chen, is a consistent performer and key figure in Taipei’s music scene with a strong interest in funk and soul. His musical expertise spans Disco, Funk, Soul, Nu-Soul, Lounge, House, Urban and Smooth Jazz.

Louis had worked in radio DJing since 2000, including programmes such as PartyZone and Back to the 80’s on Hit FM Taipei, FM 91.7 and FM 107.7. At the time of publication, he was the resident DJ for the weekly program on POP Radio FM 91.7 Taipei every Saturday.

His appearances in Taiwan included Ce la Vie Taipei, Barcode and The Den at Taipei Amba Hotel. These venues placed his selections in a range of settings within the city’s nightlife.

Louis also performed at Ximending Taipei, Grand Hyatt Hotel Taipei, W Hotel Taipei, WooBar, WetBar and Smexy Taipei. His sets combine his own style with the differing atmosphere of each venue.

Louis Chen’s guest contribution brought his established radio experience and broad record knowledge to Roots 21. The selection centres on funk and soul, while making room for electronic, disco and edit-based material.

Bicycle Corporation’s Roots 21 with guest DJ Louis Chen opens with The Human League’s Human (Extended Version), placing a Synth-Pop recording beside Dam-Funk’s electronic HowUGonFu*kAroundAndChooseABusta? on Stones Throw Records. My Lollypop’s Master and Heidi Leonore’s Reflex edit of Everybody Loves The Sunshine broaden the opening before Funkadelic’s Music 4 My Mother (Underground Resistance Mix) turns towards Funk.

80’s Child’s Be Together on Midnight Riot Recordings sustains that Funk emphasis, followed by Disco Tech’s There It Iz on DiscoDat, a record associated with Soul. Dr Packer’s Give It All You Got (Dr Packer Rework), Basement Freaks’ Funk For Freaks featuring Charlie Funk, and Rufus & Chaka Khan’s Ain’t Nobody [LNTG Rework] connect familiar vocal material with contemporary reworks.

Loose Ends’ Hangin On A String (SanFranDisko RE-Rub) leads into Chuggin Edits’ What Choo Gonna Do on Alpaca Edits, where the programme reaches Nu-Disco territory. Tuxedo’s So Good (Dimitri From Paris Remix), Lack Of Afro’s Good Love (Jack Of All Trades), and Kraak & Smaak’s Toxic Love Affair featuring Ivar and Sanguita keep the middle section focused on vocal-led edits and club-ready rework culture.

The SanFranDisko mix of Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love introduces a clear Disco thread before C. Da Afro’s Shine & Smile on SpinCat Music brings in Indie Dance. Dr Packer’s I Like Sunshine (Dr Packer’s Summertime Edit) and Tramaine’s In the Morning Time (SanFranDisko’s Forget the Brass Mix) retain the emphasis on edits, extended versions and dancefloor-friendly arrangements.

Bobby Caldwell and Jack Splash’s Never Knew Love Before brings the selection back to R&B, followed by Dr Packer’s Sweet Delight (Original Mix). George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby (30th Anniversary Remix) and Chaka Khan’s Like Sugar (Extended Mix) add further vocal soul and R&B reference points without leaving the set’s disco-focused direction.

Kano’s Can’t Hold Back (SanFranDisko Re-Rub) gives the final stretch a deeper club treatment before Chuggin Edits return with Keep On Doing Wot Ur Doin on Alpaca Edits. Geraldo Pino’s A Fifth Of Beethoven (The Reflex Edit) closes with an Afrobeat influence and a final Funk and Disco connection, bringing Louis Chen’s guest set back to the roots named by the programme.
