DJ Andrew M's weekly all-vinyl ‘Disco’ show, episode 07, features on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an English-language electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform for Asia with an international audience.
At the time of publication, Andrew M had returned to Singapore following a series of private events at parties across the USA, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, India, the UAE, Australia and South Africa, with further international performances scheduled for 2020. Away from private events, he sifts through records and demonstrates his skills as a selector at vinyl gigs.
His eclectic musical taste comes from deep-seated roots in funk and hip-hop. He has built a large collection spanning many genres in digital and vinyl formats, supported by decades of DJing experience.
Over the last decade, he has performed at prominent clubs, bars and events including Singapore's Tanjong Beach Club, Kult, CAD, Artemis, Kilo, Loof, Zouk, BluJaz, Tippling Club, Choice Cuts and Great Escape. His regional appearances have also included gigs in Indonesia and Thailand.
Andrew's career began in Australia, where he hosted pioneering hip-hop radio shows in the ’80s and ’90s and secured several successful club residencies. His work spans “mobile DJ” bookings that develop his ability to read crowds and energise parties, bar and club appearances, vinyl gigs he finds most enjoyable, and his first love, radio.
The programme focuses primarily on disco, bringing together obscure and classic tracks while occasionally extending the genre’s boundaries through full 12-inch singles. These extended versions allow the music to “breathe” rather than being truncated as it might be at a party, with disco and funk classics from artists including Doctor Ice, Herbie Hancock and Billy Ocean.
DJ Andrew M’s all-vinyl Disco show episode 07 opens with Doctor Ice’s Calling Doctor Ice on Enjoy Records, setting a Rap Music foundation. Herbie Hancock’s Tell Everybody follows, bringing another established name into the opening stretch.
Harlem World Crew’s Love Rap, issued through Traffic Entertainment Group and Tayster Records, keeps the rap focus in place. The Mighty Ryeders’ Evil Vibrations on Freestyle Records then introduces the set’s Funk element.
Jamaica Girls’ Rock the Beat on Becket Records adds a hip-hop/rap cut, linked here to Hip Hop. Carole Sylvan’s Think, released on Sound Of New York, turns the selection towards Disco.
Young & Company’s I Like What You’re Doing To Me on Brunswick Records brings in R&B before Rafael Cameron’s Funtown U.S.A. on Salsoul Records restores the disco emphasis. Billy Ocean’s Calypso Funkin’ on Epic precedes Cloud One’s closing Atmosphere Strutt, released through Cherry Red Records, ending the programme with another R&B selection.
