Bicycle Corporation presents Roots episode 15 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a tracklist that documents the duo’s selections for the programme first broadcast on 6 October 2019. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation comprises Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. The pair have released music across House Music and Techno, alongside other electronic subgenres.
Marco began his DJ career in 1991 with Urban People, playing at venues across Italy. His profile led to a residency at Pacha and DJ opportunities in countries around the world.
Raised in Torino, Stefano showed an early aptitude for music and mathematics. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums, developing an interest in Chopin and West African djembes.
As a teenager, Stefano became increasingly interested in the figure of the disc jockey. Electronic beats were scarce on Italian radio during the 1990s, but they marked the beginning of a new direction in his life.
The Roots tracklist brings together influences that have informed Bicycle Corporation’s electronic releases, including Funk, Disco, Soul, Afrobeat, Electro, Rare Groove and Hip Hop, as well as Afrocentric sounds. Bicycle Corporation is available for bookings in Asia through the DJ agency.
Bicycle Corporation’s Roots episode 15 on Scientific Sound Asia opens with The Unknown Cases’ Masimbabele in the Adrian Sherwood Remix, released on Emotional Especial, bringing an Indie Dance edge to the first selection. Edwin Starr’s Get Up in the Whirlpool Edit follows, setting up the record-focused approach that runs through the programme.
Pino Daniele’s Yes I Know My Way in its edit and Tullio De Piscopo’s Stop Bajon, issued through High Fashion Music, deepen the Disco direction. Herb Alpert’s Rotation in the DJ Harri Edit then leads into Brooklyn Dreams’ Street Man in the Hot Sauce Edit and Fela Kuti’s vs Kela Futi in the Afrobeat Lego Edit Jazzy Cut.
Fafá de Belém’s EMORIO in the Gaspar Muniz Edit and UA’s Batuque in the Balako Edit introduce Brazilian material to the selection. Runaway’s Don’t Let Go in the Runaway Edit, from Let’s Play House, and Africano’s Lego in its edit move the programme towards a more club-oriented passage.
Gilberto Gil’s Patuscada in the Gomez Edit opens the next stretch, before Donald Byrd’s You & Music in the Sleeve Production Edit brings jazz-informed playing into focus. Johnny Hammond’s Fantasy in the Andy Ash Remix follows, while Gilberto Gil returns with Toda Menina Bahiana in the Dr. Parker Remix.
Willie Colon’s Set Fire To Me in the SanFranDisko Mix, released on Rebirth, returns to vocal Soul and disco material. Chewy Rubs’ North Laine in the Sombrero Edit, Average White Band’s Pick Up the Pieces in the Breixo Edit and James Brown’s Too Funky in Here in the BC Remix keep the emphasis on reworked Funk classics.
John Davis The Monster Orchestra’s Love Magic in the Rework Mannix Crystal Disko Vocal Edit gives way to Mafikizolo’s Cantos A Ochun Et Oya in the Osunlade Remix. Ralph MacDonald closes the programme with Calypso Path in the Sofrito Edit, from Sofrito Specials, bringing Latin Music into the final transition.
