Yushka presents Funk Show 7 on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Originally from Nottingham, UK, Yushka has developed his DJ skills through free events, raves, festivals and club nights across the UK, Ireland and, more recently, Vietnam since the mid-2000s. He helped form Nottingham's What The Funk? DJ group and established Nottingham's Shits and Giggles and Hot-Point Sound Systems.
As a teenager, he was deeply interested in music and enjoyed making mixtapes. With limited funds for DJ equipment, he used basic software and a CD recorder to make mixes for classmates, who came to recognise his DJ ability.
In 2004, aged 22, he had the opportunity to use professional DJ equipment. By 2006, he was a regular at Nottingham's underground bars and nightclubs, working with co-host and founder Animinimal of Deck-starter and Catalyst.
As their shows developed, inadequate venue PA systems led them to bring their own sound system to Sh!ts and G!ggles events. Following extensive listening sessions with Matty C of Hanoi Hi-Fi, Yushka founded Nottingham's Hotpoint Sound System.
Hotpoint Sound System organised free underground events and worked with East Midlands promoters including Substance D&B, Pure Filth, TSA303, Monkey Nuts and Psycle. These collaborations presented the multi-genre nights and parties for which Hotpoint and S&G became known.
In Vietnam, he has played at Sidewalk Hanoi - Bar / Kitchen / Events in Hanoi and at Broma: Not a Bar, Arcan and Bann Bar in Ho Chi Minh City. He has also opened for Drum and Bass artists EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken.
His sets draw on chilled, laid-back beats, Breaks, Hip Hop, Electro, Tech and Drum and Bass, with elements of Funk and Soul. In 2019, he was a resident DJ at Sunday Funk Sessions at Arcan in Ho Chi Minh City and joined the Scientific Sound Asia DJ Agency.
Yushka's Funk Show 7 on Scientific Sound Asia opens with Louis Armstrong's Mack The Knife (ProleteR Tribute) before Andy Cooper's Allergies remix of Chasing The Funk on Unique Records introduces Nu-Disco movement. DJ Wood's Tunisian Knights on Westwood Records and The Chakachas' Funk Ferret edit of Jungle Fever on Ghetto Funk keep the early selection centred on familiar funk sources and edits.
The Funk Hunters bring Breaks into focus through Soul City on Westwood Recordings, followed by Jesse and the Wolf's Talk To Me on Fool's Gold Inc. The latter adds an Electronica turn before The Funk Hunters return with Shoop Booty on Ghetto Funk and Dirty Dubsters featuring Afu Ra deliver the Pimpsoul remix of Real Shit on Breakdown.
BadboE's Mr. Big Stuff on Unidisc and El Bomba's Party Your Ass Off on Breakerz Banquet lead into Malente's Funk The Rich on Unique. Stickybuds follows with Kingston Funk on Big M Productions, bringing a more broken rhythmic feel through Breakbeat.
Q-Tip's Breathe & Stop in the DJ XS version precedes James Brown's Mr. Drunk remix of Get on the Good Foot on Universal, keeping classic material in the sequence. Rueben Bell's Stickybuds edit of Superjock then gives way to The Funk Hunters, Livingstone and Canosis with Fly Robin on ReSoul.
Jackson Sisters' I Believe In Miracles on Featurecast brings in Soul, before Black Machine's How Gee on Wagram returns to a disco-rooted pace. Nick Fonkynson's I Don't Know on Boogie Boutique and Ray Charles' Father Funk remix of I Got A Woman on Funk Therapy keep the mid-set momentum brisk.
DJ Twister's A Message To You Cutty is followed by Slynk and Megan Hamilton featuring The Bermudas on With The Funk, released through Symphonic Distribution. BMD's Your Thing on True Funk and Breakerz Allstarz's You Wanna Hear Dis on Breakerz Banquet sustain the funk-led dancefloor approach.
The final stretch moves through Funkanomics' Boogie Nights on Big M Productions, Trotter and Telephunken's Same Place, Same Time on Royal Sound Records, and A.Skillz's remix of California Soul on Finger Licking Records. Basement Freaks' Funkanomics remix of Get Down Boogie on Jalapeno, Omegaman's Jayl Funk remix of Hip Drop on Studio 57, Aldo Vanucci and Featurecast's Blue Grassed Devil on Funk Weapons, and Basschimp's Strictly Sensimilla on 9th Avenue Records close the show with its emphasis on funk edits and broken beats.
