Bicycle Corporation presented Roots 106 with guest DJ Brendon P on Scientific Sound Asia in 2021. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian collaboration between DJ and producer Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. The pair formed Bicycle Corporation in 2009, bringing Marco’s DJ and production experience together with Stefano’s instrumental background.
Marco began his musical career as a DJ and producer in Turin during the early 1990s, working with the Urban People collective. He organised events across Italy, which led to wider recognition, a residency at Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh and international DJ bookings.
Born and raised in Torino, Stefano showed an early aptitude for music and studied classical piano, percussion and drums. His influences included Chopin and the West African djembe, providing a foundation that later met his interest in electronic music.
As a teenager, Stefano became fascinated by the role of the DJ in energising a crowd and by electronic beats rarely heard on Italian radio during the 1990s. That interest helped open the path towards Bicycle Corporation and its wider electronic approach.
The project has released more than fifty productions and remixes across deep house, tech house, French house and techno, including work for Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, Suka and GrooveTraxx. Roots provides a space for broader electronic selections and guest DJs, including this edition with Brendon P.
Marco is based in Taipei and works across a wider South East Asian network, while remaining available for bookings through the DJ agency. His Marco Mei profile also represents his weekly broadcasts on the radio station.
The Bicycle Corporation Roots 106 with Brendon P guest edition opens with Roy Ayers’ Third Time in Jeremy Newall’s New Late Nite Slide and Martin Wold featuring Alexander Nyhoff’s Frekke Frø in the Rave-Enka Remiks. The Secret Soul Society versus BLAOS Recordings’ JRs Revenge on Paper Recordings introduces Electronica, before Dutch Robinson’s OPOLOPO Remix of Drive Me Wild on Only Good Vibes Music brings Nu-Disco into the sequence.
Nu Genea and Célia Kameni’s Marechià on NG Records brings Funk into focus, followed by Cøhen’s Strangers on Villes Et Fleurs with its Indie Dance character. The Secret Soul Society’s Know Just What To Do on Slightly Transformed and Brendon P’s re-work of Heaven 17’s Let Me Go keep the opening half exploratory.
Q&A’s Pulse on Leng Records restores the Indie Dance emphasis before Gary Clail On-U Sound System’s Human Nature on Perfecto Records introduces Dub. Rams’ Egyptian Beads on Golden Soul Records and Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy on Wild Bunch extend the set through distinctive vocal and rhythmic selections.
Jesus Loves You’s Discomacks Edit of Generations Of Love, Nomad’s SmokaTwstdReEdit of [I Wanna Give You] Devotion and The Frontline Orchestra’s Ilya Santana Re-Edit of Don’t Turn Your Back On Me bring a run of reworked club records. Anane’s Dave Lee club mix of Tell Me That I’m Dreaming on Nervous Records returns to the Nu-Disco direction.
Loletta Halloway’s It’s All About The Paper on Salsoul Records is followed by Gledd’s Agua Do Romao via Hypeedit. Igor Gonya’s Cafuné on Bandcamp then introduces Latin Music before the final pair of selections.
Pete Josef’s Jazzanova Remix of Giants on Sonar Kollektiv gives the closing stretch a measured change of pace. Reggae Disco Rockers’ edited The Whistle Song closes Roots 106 with another considered selection from the programme’s broad record bag.
Guest DJ Brendon P.
DJ Brendon P, whose real name is Brendon Perera, is a native of Singapore and prefers the low-profile, lo-fi approach to his work and has performed as a disc jockey for over four decades. Brendon P has a long history of Clubs and Music; starting in 1980, in the Singaporean mobile DJ circuit, and moving on to clubs a year later.
A visit to New York in 1984, and visiting clubs such as the Funhouse, the Paradise Garage, Dancetaria and Area, weaned him into the New York club culture, and into the music that was to become the house music that we hear today. Crossing vast musical backgrounds over his years as a DJ, both locally and internationally, he continued to acquire a keen ear and passion for dance music, his main genres now being House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge, and Electronica.
From doing the club rounds in the ’80s, both locally and internationally, with the Juliana’s and Bacchus groups, residencies with Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX in the ’90s, and a 9-year residency at the globally renowned Zouk Club in Singapore. Between July 2001 and May 2009, he held a 2-year Residency at Kyo, and spent the last five years on the team of residents at the Swanky CE LA VI Rooftop Club & Skybar at Marina Bay Sands; he continues to be a regular feature in the local and international club circuit today.
Having DJ'ed in cities across the globe (including Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taiwan, Hanoi & Hong Kong, just to name a few), he has also played at the world-renowned (and now defunct) Cielo Club in New York in June 2010. Brendon, in his own and separate right, as a producer, has also released his original material/remixes on In The Woods (USA), Los Grandes (Spain), Reversoulmusic (USA), Audio Parallax (UK), Hotbox Music (USA), Soul Shift (USA), Defected (UK), Rawjak (SG), Eclesia (SG), Issys Groove (UK), Love International (MY) and One With Music (SG).
With his stringent adherence to music style and sophistication and attention to detail, it's not difficult to understand why Nicolas Mattar, owner of New York's 'Cielo' and ‘Output’, calls him a 'taste master' and one of the best DJ's in the region. Expect nothing less from him than a set that crosses vast musical boundaries; past, present and future.
Bicycle Corporation welcomes guest DJ Brendon P for Roots 106, with a selection shaped by Nu Disco, Disco House, Soul, Funk, Deep House and Balearic rhythm. Roy Ayers opens with Third Time in Jeremy Newall’s New Late Nite Slide, placing the first track inside Deep House through its Virgin Ubiquity: Remixed context.
Martin Wold and Alexander Nyhoff’s Frekke Frø follows in the Rave-Enka Remiks, moving the show into Nu Disco through Paper Recordings’ leftfield club identity. The Secret Soul Society and BLAOS Recordings then continue that line with JRs Revenge, keeping the opening section groove-led and edit-focused.
Dutch Robinson’s Drive Me Wild in the OPOLOPO remix brings Soul and Funk into the sequence, drawing from the vocalist’s classic source material and OPOLOPO’s polished groove language. Nu Genea and Célia Kameni then follow with Marechià, a disco funk record built around Neapolitan and French vocals.
Cøhen’s Strangers returns the programme to Deep House before The Secret Soul Society’s Know Just What To Do restores the Nu Disco thread. Heaven 17’s Let Me Go appears in Brendon P’s re-work, adding a synth-pop source reshaped for disco and club use.
Q&A’s Pulse introduces Balearic and downtempo colour through Leng Records’ slower, atmospheric catalogue identity. Gary Clail On-U Sound System’s Human Nature then brings Reggae and dub influence into the mix before Rams’ Egyptian Beads keeps the tempo relaxed and textured.
Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy brings a soul-rooted trip-hop reference into the middle section, giving the set a deeper and more cinematic turn. Jesus Loves You then returns the programme to Nu Disco / Disco with Generations Of Love in the Discomacks edit.
Nomad’s [I Wanna Give You] Devotion appears in the SmokaTwstdReEdit, moving the set into House through a classic club source. The Frontline Orchestra’s Don’t Turn Your Back On Me in the Ilya Santana re-edit then shifts into Disco House with a stronger dancefloor pulse.
Anané’s Tell Me That I'm Dreaming appears in Dave Lee’s Disco Not Disco Club Mix, keeping the late section inside Disco House through Nervous Records and Lee’s long-running connection to soulful, disco-tinged House. Loleatta Holloway’s It's All About The Paper follows on Salsoul Records, adding another classic vocal disco reference.
Gledd’s Agua Do Romao moves back into Deep House before Igor Gonya’s Cafuné returns to Disco House through a smoother edit-led groove. Pete Josef’s Giants in the Jazzanova remix then brings the set back towards Soul and Funk, supported by Josef’s Sonar Kollektiv profile across soul, jazz and pop.
Reggae Disco Rockers close Roots 106 with The Whistle Song in edited form, ending the show on a Nu Disco / Disco placement shaped by reggae and club influences. Brendon P’s guest selection links Soul, Funk, Disco House, Nu Disco, Deep House and Balearic material through a warm, groove-led structure.
