Bicycle Corporation return with episode 208 of Roots on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform serving listeners across the region and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the long-running collaboration between Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Their production catalogue spans Deep House, French House, Tech House and Techno.
Marco began DJing in Turin during the early 1990s as Italy’s underground House and Techno scenes were developing rapidly. Through his involvement with the Urban People collective, he worked as a DJ, promoter and event organiser while becoming increasingly connected with the country’s emerging electronic music community.
His growing reputation later led to a residency with Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. That opportunity strengthened his international profile and opened the way for further bookings across Europe, Asia and other parts of the global club circuit.
Years of travelling and record collecting broadened Marco’s musical outlook beyond contemporary club music alone. Afrocentric rhythms and older electronic records became part of the musical background that continues to influence both his DJing and the wider direction of Roots.
Stefano’s musical foundations were established through classical piano, percussion and drums. His early interests ranged from composers including Chopin to the rhythmic traditions of West African music, giving him a broad understanding of melody, structure and percussion before electronic production became his principal focus.
As his interest in electronic music developed, Stefano began applying that formal training to studio production and experimentation. His musical knowledge combined naturally with Marco’s experience behind the decks, giving them a partnership built around both dancefloor awareness and technical musicianship.
Earlier and overlooked material from the project is also available through the their Bandcamp archive. The archive gives listeners another route into the duo’s back catalogue while preserving productions from different stages of their development.
Episode 208 continues that approach by moving away from a conventional contemporary club set and concentrating instead on the records, rhythms and musical traditions that inform the duos wider identity. The programme gives Marco and Stefano space to connect older selections with the influences that continue to appear throughout their productions and DJ work.
Roots Episode 208 opens with IMPI's New Wave cut "Impi" before The Pool's "Jamaica Resting" moves into Electro and XR 7 introduces an early Synth Pop instrumental. Tom Scott's "Burundi Bump" then begins a strong Jazz Music thread that returns through Airto Moreira and Herbie Hancock as the selection moves freely between electronic, rock and global influences.
Johnny Harris and Dom Um Romão establish the first Disco passages, while Yes, Mitchum Yacoub and Front 242 send the sequence in sharply different directions through rock, world music and EBM. Bobby O's Hi-NRG pulse and Rafael Cameron's boogie groove then bring the programme decisively back towards the dancefloor before Jackie Moore, Chilly and Cloud One form a sustained run of late-1970s disco.
Lyn Collins and Hamilton Bohannon pull the set into Funk before Aretha Franklin's dub treatment adds another disco variation and Azymuth's "Rapa Poeira" introduces Brazilian samba. Bobby Byrd keeps the funk connection alive with "I Know You Got Soul", linking the later stages back to the raw rhythmic foundations that sit underneath much of the episode's boogie material.
Cerrone and Explorer return to disco for the closing stretch before Hi-Fi Brothers finish with "The Line" and its distinctly Italo Disco character. Across Episode 208, they connect many styles of Afrocentric and electronic club music without flattening their historical differences, allowing each original style to remain part of the programme's unusually broad musical lineage.
