Soulful House

Putting The Science Into Music

Soulful House developed during the late 1980s and 1990s from the meeting point between House Music, Soul, Gospel, Disco and R&B. The style kept House Music's four-to-the-floor rhythm while leaning more heavily on expressive vocals, rich chords and live-influenced instrumentation.

Its foundations trace back to Chicago House, New York Garage and the deeper club music associated with New Jersey. Producers combined drum machines and electronic basslines with piano, organ, strings, brass and vocal performances rooted in Soul and Gospel traditions.

Artists and producers including Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Masters at Work, Blaze, Kerri Chandler and Louie Vega became closely associated with different sides of the sound. Singers, musicians and remixers played an equally important role, bringing traditional songwriting and vocal performance into extended club arrangements.

Soulful House commonly features warm basslines, layered percussion, piano chords and prominent lead or backing vocals. Some tracks sit close to Garage House or Deep House, while others draw more directly from Disco, Gospel and contemporary R&B.

The genre gained an international audience through clubs, independent labels, specialist radio and DJ compilations during the 1990s and 2000s. Strong scenes developed in the United States, Britain, South Africa, Europe and other regions, where vocal and musically detailed House found dedicated audiences.

The Soulful House category includes classic and modern House Music built around melody, harmony and expressive performance. Its defining character comes from the connection between electronic dance-floor rhythm and the musical traditions of Soul, Gospel and Disco.

At Scientific Sound Asia, soulful house is a defining feature of Marco Mei, with further appearances on Velvety Elements and Roots.
