Dub Techno

Putting The Science Into Music

Dub Techno developed during the early 1990s by combining techno's repetitive machine rhythms with production methods drawn from Jamaican dub. The style placed greater emphasis on space, echo, low frequencies and gradual tonal change than on conventional melodies or dramatic arrangements.

Berlin producers Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus became central figures through Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound and the Chain Reaction label. Their records used delayed chords, filtered percussion, tape hiss and deep bass to build a reduced form of techno shaped by repetition and studio effects.

The genre also connected with Detroit Techno through its futuristic atmosphere, mechanical pulse and interest in extended electronic composition. Rather than copying reggae structures directly, Dub Techno adapted dub's mixing techniques and sound-system weight to a steady four-to-the-floor framework.

Dub Techno commonly uses muted chord stabs, reverb, delay, restrained drum programming and subtle changes across long arrangements. Individual sounds often sit partially hidden within the mix, building depth through texture and controlled movement.

Artists including Vladislav Delay, Deepchord, Porter Ricks, Monolake and Maurizio expanded the style through ambient, minimal and more experimental approaches. Dub Techno now overlaps with Deep Techno, Minimal Techno and ambient electronic music while keeping its focus on bass, space and studio processing.

At Scientific Sound Asia, dub techno is a defining feature of two shows: Floating Beats and Velvety Elements.
