This event took place at Mix and Paint, 93 Võ Nguyên Giáp, An Khánh, Ho Chi Minh City 70000, from 9:30 PM on 10 February 2017 until 6 AM on 11 February 2017, with the original location retained for archival accuracy even though the venue has since closed. Scientific Sound Saigon presented Leeroy Thornhill, a founding member of The Prodigy, for a night of Breaks, Electro, Hip Hop, Rock-influenced club music and heavy dancefloor energy.

The booking brought one of the best-known figures from 1990s British electronic music culture to Vietnam. Thornhill had spent more than a decade with The Prodigy during the group’s defining international period, performing on major tours, festival stages and large-scale live shows around the world.

His years with the group placed him directly inside the crossover between rave culture, Breakbeat, electronic music and the aggressive live performance style that helped The Prodigy stand apart from many other acts of the era. That history gave the Ho Chi Minh City event a direct connection with one of the most important chapters in British electronic music.

After leaving The Prodigy, Thornhill concentrated on solo production under the name Flightcrank and returned more fully to DJing. His individual work allowed him to explore a broader set of influences while keeping the raw energy and attitude associated with the music that had shaped his earlier career.

His DJ sets developed into a mash-up of tough Electro Breaks, old school samples, Hip Hop, Rock and Electro. Familiar hooks could collide with heavier rhythms and funk-driven selections, giving his performances a party-focused character without restricting the music to one narrow genre.

That approach fitted particularly well with a long overnight event in Ho Chi Minh City. Breaks and Electro could provide the backbone, while Hip Hop and Rock influences gave the set enough variety to move between different generations of underground and alternative dance music.

By the time of the Scientific Sound Saigon appearance, Thornhill was also associated with Smash HiFi. The project formed another part of his post-Prodigy activity and continued his involvement with electronic production, DJing and bass-heavy club music.

The event therefore represented much more than a nostalgia booking. Thornhill arrived as an active DJ and producer whose selections remained informed by the rave era while incorporating newer electronic sounds and the broader musical interests developed over decades on the road.

His connection with 1990s rave culture was particularly relevant to Scientific Sound Asia, which has long worked across different strands of underground music including House, Hip Hop, Jungle, Drum and Bass and Breakbeat-driven sounds. The booking reflected an early stage of the organisation’s international event activity in Vietnam.

Support on the night came from DJ Psycho-UK, representing Scientific Sound Saigon. The East London DJ brought his own background in Hip Hop, Acid House, Hardcore, Jungle, Drum and Bass and underground rave culture to the opening part of the event.

DJ Psycho-UK began DJing at the age of fourteen with a pair of Soundlab DLP1 turntables and a four-track mixer. His early years developed through Hip Hop before Acid House, Hardcore and the emerging rave scene widened his musical direction.

That background gave the support slot a strong connection with the same period of British underground culture that had helped shape The Prodigy. Both DJs had experienced the transformation of rave and electronic music from local underground scenes into a much larger international movement, albeit from different parts of that culture.

DJ Psycho-UK’s influences included Public Enemy, KRS-One and Run-DMC alongside artists such as DJ Hype, Carl Cox, Mickey Finn and A Guy Called Gerald. Later electronic influences including Leftfield, Portishead and Massive Attack further widened the musical framework behind his sets.

His activity also included pirate radio and underground parties in London before his later move into events and promotion in Vietnam. That history made him a natural support choice for a guest whose own career was closely tied to British rave, Breakbeat and electronic club culture.

The musical overlap between the two artists gave the night a coherent direction without making the sets identical. DJ Psycho-UK could draw from Hip Hop, Breaks and rave foundations before Thornhill pushed the programme further into Electro Breaks, Rock-influenced selections and harder crossover material.

Hip Hop formed an important part of that relationship because both selectors drew from its rhythmic and sampling traditions. Old school vocal cuts, breakbeats and familiar samples could sit naturally beside electronic production throughout the night.

Breaks gave the event another strong connection with British club culture. The style had developed through several generations of rave, Breakbeat and bass music, making it a natural meeting point between Thornhill’s post-Prodigy DJ work and Scientific Sound Saigon’s wider underground programming.

The Rock influence added another dimension and reflected the kind of genre collision that had helped make The Prodigy so distinctive. Heavy guitar textures and aggressive energy could be folded into electronic sets without turning the event into a conventional rock night.

Mix and Paint provided the setting for the nine-hour session, running from 9:30 PM until 6 AM. The extended format gave the DJs enough time to build the night gradually and allowed the music to move from opening selections into the heavier material associated with Thornhill’s headline performance.

The venue has since closed, making preservation of the address important for documenting this period of Ho Chi Minh City nightlife. Events such as this show how independent venues could host internationally recognised artists while remaining connected with the local underground scene.

Scientific Sound Saigon would later develop into the wider Scientific Sound Asia radio station, events, DJ agency and music news platform operating today. The Leeroy Thornhill booking stands as an early example of the organisation bringing established international underground artists directly to audiences in Vietnam.

The night connected several generations of UK club culture within one Ho Chi Minh City event. DJ Psycho-UK brought East London Hip Hop, Acid House and rave roots, while Leeroy Thornhill brought the experience of The Prodigy, Flightcrank, Smash HiFi and decades of Breakbeat-driven electronic music.

Leeroy Thornhill at Mix and Paint therefore remains an important part of the Scientific Sound Saigon archive. Breaks, Electro, Hip Hop, Rock-influenced club music and old-school rave energy came together for an all-night session that linked one of Britain’s most influential electronic acts with the developing underground event scene in Ho Chi Minh City.
