Event Details

This event took place at The Villa Project, 199C2 Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, Thảo Điền, Quận 2, Ho Chi Minh City 70000, from 9 PM on 26 April 2024. Scientific Sound Asia presented 30 Years of V Recordings Vietnam with Bryan Gee and Paul T & Edward Oberon, celebrating three decades of one of Drum and Bass music’s most respected independent labels.

Founded in 1993 by Bryan Gee and Jumpin Jack Frost, V Recordings became closely associated with the development of Drum and Bass through a catalogue built around strong basslines, rolling rhythms and a distinctly musical approach to the genre. Across three decades, the label helped connect the early Jungle movement with successive generations of producers and DJs.

The label’s history includes releases from artists such as Roni Size, DJ Die, DJ Marky, Dillinja, Krust, Serum and Need For Mirrors. Later generations including L-Side, Alibi, Command Strange and Paul T & Edward Oberon continued that tradition while bringing newer production techniques into the wider V Recordings sound.

Bryan Gee arrived in Ho Chi Minh City as the co-founder of V Recordings and one of the central figures behind the label’s development. His work as a DJ, label head and A&R has helped introduce new artists while maintaining the connection between Jungle’s early foundations and contemporary Drum and Bass.

His involvement gave the Vietnam anniversary event a direct link with the history being celebrated rather than treating the night simply as a themed label showcase. Bryan Gee’s selections could move across different periods of the V catalogue while reflecting the broad range of Drum and Bass he has supported throughout his career.

Paul T & Edward Oberon represented a later generation of the label and brought their own distinctive production partnership to the line-up. Their work is known for deep basslines, soulful musical elements and rolling rhythms that sit naturally within the long-running V Recordings tradition.

Bringing Bryan Gee together with Paul T & Edward Oberon allowed the event to connect different eras of the label within the same programme. The combination reflected how V Recordings had continued to evolve rather than existing purely as a legacy imprint built around its 1990s catalogue.

Support came from Skitty, DJ Psycho-UK and DJ Scibes. Together, the support line-up connected established UK Drum and Bass roots with selectors already involved in developing the music’s audience in Ho Chi Minh City.

Skitty brought his own substantial connection with British Drum and Bass through releases associated with Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, Subtitles and his Foundation X imprint. His darker and more technical background provided a complementary contrast to the rolling and soulful side of the V Recordings catalogue.

DJ Psycho-UK represented Scientific Sound Asia with a background stretching from East London Hip Hop and rave culture into Jungle and Drum and Bass. His involvement linked the anniversary with the organisation’s longer history of supporting bass music through events, radio programming and artist activity in Vietnam.

DJ Scibes completed the support programme and added another locally connected selector to the night. The combined line-up gave the event a balance between international guests and DJs already active within the Ho Chi Minh City underground scene.

The event also arrived during a period when Scientific Sound Asia was rebuilding regular live activity after the disruption of the pandemic years. Rather than relying on small local sessions alone, the V Recordings anniversary demonstrated a renewed ability to bring established international Drum and Bass artists into Vietnam.

That momentum later fed into the return of DnB Saigon, including the first Night Life Bar edition in May 2024. The smaller biweekly format gave local selectors their own recurring platform while the V Recordings event represented the larger international side of the programme.

The Villa Project also became part of Scientific Sound Asia’s broader event history during this period. Earlier in 2024, the venue had hosted the Scientific Sound Records launch party with Marco Mei, showing how the space was used across both House and Drum and Bass programming.

Scientific Sound Asia’s wider activity connects these events through its radio station, DJ agency, events programme and music news. The V Recordings anniversary remains one of the clearest examples of that work linking international label history with Vietnam’s local underground community.

30 Years of V Recordings Vietnam brought Bryan Gee, Paul T & Edward Oberon, Skitty, DJ Psycho-UK and DJ Scibes together for a night rooted in three decades of Jungle and Drum and Bass culture. The event celebrated V Recordings not as a museum piece, but as a still-active label connecting the music’s foundations with a newer generation of artists and listeners.
