Bicycle Corporation return with another edition of Foundations, this time featuring guest DJ Brendon P on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform serving listeners across the region and internationally.
Bicycle Corporation is the Italian duo formed by Marco Mei and Stefano Ugliano, better known as 6884. Together they have produced more than fifty original tracks and remixes spanning House, Deep House, Tech House, melodic electronic music and Techno.
Marco began his career in Turin during the early 1990s as a DJ and producer, becoming closely involved with Italy’s underground electronic music scene. His early work combined DJing with promotion and event organisation, giving him experience both behind the decks and in developing his own parties.
He later founded Urban People, a collective that presented House and Techno events across Italy. The project helped establish his reputation and eventually contributed to an opportunity with the international Pacha club brand.
Marco subsequently took up a residency with Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The position strengthened his international profile and opened the way for bookings across Europe, Asia and other parts of the global club circuit.
His wider musical interests developed through years of record collecting and extended beyond House and Techno alone. Afrocentric rhythms, Disco, Funk and other electronic influences became part of the musical background that would later inform both Bicycle Corporation and the Foundations series.
Stefano grew up in Turin and showed considerable musical ability from an early age. He studied classical piano, percussion and drums while developing interests ranging from the compositions of Chopin to the rhythms of West African djembe.
That training gave him a strong understanding of melody, rhythm and arrangement before electronic music became his principal focus. As he grew older, the role of the DJ and the energy created between a selector and a dancefloor became increasingly fascinating to him.
Electronic music was still comparatively difficult to hear on mainstream Italian radio during the 1990s, which encouraged Stefano to search more deeply for the records and production techniques behind the sounds that interested him. His curiosity gradually moved from listening towards production and the technical possibilities offered by electronic music.
Meeting Marco provided the catalyst for what eventually became Bicycle Corporation. Marco’s experience as a DJ and promoter combined with Stefano’s musical training and studio interests, giving the duo a flexible foundation for production and performance.
Their work has since moved across several areas of underground electronic music without being restricted to one narrow style. That broad musical outlook also allows the pair to look beyond current club releases and explore the records and influences that helped shape their development.
Guest DJ Brendon P.
This edition’s guest is DJ Brendon P, the stage name of Singaporean DJ and producer Brendon Perera. With more than four decades behind the decks, he has built a reputation for understated selection, musical depth and a low-profile approach centred on the records themselves.
Brendon began DJing in 1980 on Singapore’s mobile DJ circuit before moving into clubs the following year. Those early experiences gave him a strong grounding in programming music for different audiences and established the foundations of a career that would continue across several generations of dance music.
A visit to New York in 1984 became one of the most important periods in his musical development. During the trip, he experienced clubs including the Funhouse, Paradise Garage, Danceteria and Area, introducing him directly to the sounds and club culture that would contribute to the development of modern House music.
That exposure had a lasting effect on his musical direction and encouraged him to explore a wider range of dance music. His selections have since moved through House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge and Electronica, with examples of his work available through SoundCloud and HearThis.
During the 1980s, Brendon worked across local and international clubs associated with the Juliana’s and Bacchus groups. The following decade brought residencies at Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX before he began a nine-year residency at Zouk Singapore.
That long period at Zouk became one of the defining stages of his career and placed him within one of Asia’s best-known club institutions. Further residency work followed at Kyo and later at CÉ LA VI Rooftop Club & SkyBar at Marina Bay Sands, strengthening his position within Singapore’s electronic music community.
Brendon’s international appearances have taken him to cities including Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taipei, Hanoi and Hong Kong. In June 2010, he also performed at the former Cielo Club in New York, reconnecting his career with the city that had influenced him so strongly during the 1980s.
Alongside DJing, Brendon has developed a substantial catalogue as a producer and remixer. His Beatport profile includes releases through labels such as In The Woods, Los Grandes, Reversoulmusic, Audio Parallax, Hotbox Music, Soul Shift, Defected, Rawjak, Eclesia, Issys Groove, Love International and One With Music.
Further material can be explored through his Juno Download catalogue, documenting another side of a career built around both studio work and long-form DJ selection. His production output reflects the same broad outlook heard in his sets, moving between deeper House, Disco-influenced material and other forms of electronic music.
His recorded mixes are also available through Mixcloud, where his attention to pacing and musical progression is particularly evident. Nicolas Matar, owner of the former New York clubs Cielo and Output, described Brendon as a “taste master” and one of the leading DJs in the region.
Across more than forty years, Brendon P has remained focused on musical selection rather than short-lived trends. His ability to move naturally between older records, contemporary productions and different areas of electronic music makes him particularly well suited to Foundations, where his knowledge of House, Disco, Funk, Soul and Electronica brings a broad historical perspective to the programme.
Brendon P opens Bicycle Corporation Foundations 20 with Karyme's "Memory Foam" before Hamza Rahimtula brings African rhythm firmly into the programme through "Tribal Calling". Bassekou Kouyate and Hamza's "Ben Kadi" in its Banjara Edit continues that direction with a blend of Malian instrumentation and Afro House percussion, giving the early sequence a strong connection between traditional musicianship and contemporary club production.
Melle Brown's "Brown Eyes (Golden)" changes the mood through a warmer fusion of neo-soul, jazz and Deep House, before Sunner Soul and King Mutapa lead the mix back towards the dancefloor. Manuel Kane, Col Lawton's Deep Afro remix of Nasiphi Shtamzen and Workerz's "A Bronx Tape" continue the deeper movement, with the latter sitting comfortably between deep, soulful and disco-informed house.
Robot 84 and D.O.P lead into Roach Motel before Clive From Accounts and Hunee maintain Brendon P's preference for records that connect modern underground production with older House Music traditions. Paul Deighton provides another rhythmic shift before Lore Of The Samurai's "Justifice" restores the deep-house focus through filtered chords, restrained groove and a distinctly warm late-night character.
The Younger Than Me edit of Faithless' "Insomnia" and the Assassin remix of Adamski and Seal's "Killer" bring familiar electronic records into a new dancefloor context before Frankie Knuckles provides the episode's clearest link to Classic House with the Director's Cut Signature Mix of "Your Love". Bakers Dozen close with "Piano Lessons", completing a set that moves from Afro and soulful influences through deeper contemporary grooves to records closely connected with the foundations of house itself.
