The Funk Sessions present their sixth Scientific Sound Asia show with playlists from Yushka, Robson Jr and My Catt. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian and international electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform.
Since 2019, the Funk Sessions crew have brought parties centred on funk to dance floors across Ho Chi Minh City. The international DJ and party crew, whose members are primarily based in Vietnam and come from Australia and the UK, play funk classics and old-school hip hop, alongside disco, party breaks, ghetto funk and related styles.
The crew draw on experience of club nights, free parties and festivals, as well as support slots for established underground artists. Their selections are heavily influenced by breakbeat pioneers, an influence heard especially in their hip hop, funky breaks and ghetto funk sets.
Funk Sessions hold regular events in Ho Chi Minh City at Broma (not a bar), TNR, Indika and Apt852. Previous and additional venues include Secret Weekend, Tempo, Arcan, Haus, Banana Mama, Piu Piu, Sky 9, Rogue Saigon, Soma and Saigon Outcast.
Funk Dem Beats is a regular Ho Chi Minh City club event based mainly at TNR, described as a dive bar. The night brings live musicians and DJs together in an open-ended jam session spanning several genres.
For this sixth show, the Funk Dem Beats trio assembled a selection of funk, soul, hip hop and breaks. Yushka opens with trippy, soul-led beats, rock, soul, funk and funky breaks, building from smooth passages towards ghetto funk material.
Robson Jr supplies the second part of the programme with tropical beats and swing-infused selections intended for the dance floor. My Catt closes with a mini mix that moves from tropical swing into a mash-up of Balkan beats, breaks and world-flavoured selections; at the time, he was described as a newly emerging selector.
Funk Sessions sixth show with Yushka, Robson Jr and My Catt opens with Fome Total's Zuco 103 in the Funky Lowlives Total Dub Remix on Zuco Sound. Bana's Cape Verde-inflected Canta Cu Alma Magoada, in Waggles' edit for Waggles, sits beside Ceux Qui Marchent Debout's brass-led I'm Glad You're Mine on Next Music, Bells Atlas's Bling, Danilla's Junko Furuta on Orion Records and Tommy McCook's reggae cut Bubble Strut on Chappy.
Ephemerals bring Nu-Disco through The Oligarch on Mondegreen, before Bacao Rhythm And Steel Band's Bacao Suave on Big Crown introduces rap and hip hop. The Fundamentals follow with the R&B of Thing (Original) on Kudosrecords, while DJ Maars's Come Dancing on Booty Fruit combines reggae and hip hop before Bana's Waggles edit returns.
Barbatuques take the set into Afro House with Baiana on Optimo Music. Savages Y Suefo's Ballroom Breakers, in Fab Samperi's Deep Bossa Mix on Agogo Records, leads towards Tape Five featuring Henrik Wagner's jazz number Dixie Biscuit on Smart-Mart-Records, with Erik Sumo And The Fox Fairies' Dance Dance Have A Good Time in the Tws Refix between them.
Mashed Up Funk's Change My Bucket and Patra featuring Lynn Collins's DJ Rukus Intro remix of Think About It prepare the way for Nekta's Guess Who on Infracom, a breaks record. Fatboy Slim's Gramophone Soul Remix of Weapon of Choice on Original Skint Records brings in House Music, followed by Gypsy Hill featuring Besh O Drom's Balaka on Batoy Records, Mooqee and Pimpsoul's Keep Pounding on Bomb Strikes, and Dunkelbunt featuring Harry Stojka and The Cat Empire's The Stojka Empire on Wagram Music.
Waggles's Fan Dem Adelita gives way to Livingstone & Canosis's reggae track Peg Leg on Riddim Fruit Records and Us3's hip hop staple Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) on Capitol Records. Gregory Porter's Claptone Remix of Liquid Spirit on Blue Note, Panama Cardoon's Calimambo on Carnibal and GoldFish's funky house track Wet Welly on Pacha Recordings move into Basement Jaxx's house cut Do Your Thing on XL Recordings.
The later stretch brings Groove Armada's Fatboy Slim Radio Edit of I See You Baby on Jive into Phunk Sinatra vs Basement Freaks' Basement Remix of Sound Like That on Breakbeat Paradise. Zamina Mina's Africa on Touré Jim's adds Makossa before Balkan Beat Box's Bulgarian Chicks on JDub Records, Skeewiff's Burro Magico on Pedigree Cuts, Breakbeat Junkie's electronica remix of Rock The Funky Beat on Timewarp Music, Mr Pacho Vibes System's Latin Music selection Soul Sista, and Caravan Palace's Gypsy Jazz closer Brother Swing on Wagram bring the programme to its finish.
