Joshua announces track-list for new shows 20th of July 2020

DJ Joshua returns with another pairing of Floating Beats and Velvety Elements on Scientific Sound Asia, presenting two contrasting sides of his electronic music collection. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across the region and internationally.

Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s and has built his collection across vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital formats. House and Techno form an important part of that background alongside Drum and Bass, Chillout and other electronic styles explored throughout his years as a DJ and radio presenter.

He began mixing during the early 1990s and quickly developed a strong interest in vinyl collecting before becoming involved with local radio. His work expanded into events, collaborations with friends and support for local artists as Portugal’s rave and underground electronic scenes continued to develop.

After stepping away from regular DJ activity to concentrate on family life, he eventually returned to music and established Floating Beats. The programme became an outlet for the deeper, progressive and hypnotic side of his collection, combining atmosphere, controlled pacing and underground House and Techno.

Velvety Elements developed as a complementary programme with a warmer and more soulful direction. Its selections place greater emphasis on groove, melody and continuity, allowing Joshua to explore softer shades of House without simply repeating the musical identity of Floating Beats.

His production work has also developed through several distinct aliases, each providing a separate outlet for different areas of his electronic music interests. Joshua Marian is associated with warmer, soulful and melodic material, while Joshua Fernand concentrates on tougher club-focused Techno and more forceful rhythmic structures.

As Joshua Marian, releases including Soul Zone and Love My Soul on Bassment Tapes reflect the warmer side of his catalogue. Further material such as Tengo Rojo, Restless Lips, Always On My Mind and I Can Go You Can See has continued that connection with groove-led and melodic electronic music.

The K Joshua project gives him room to explore more hypnotic, spacious, dub-influenced and experimental ideas. Releases including Promised Work, Stranger Things, As You Are and Slow Laziness demonstrate a more abstract side of his production while maintaining the depth found throughout his wider catalogue.

Joshua Fernand provides the strongest contrast, focusing on tougher club material and contemporary Techno. Releases such as Blue River, Breaking Rocks and Tearing Metal give this alias a more direct and percussive identity than his Joshua Marian and K Joshua projects.

In 2024, he founded JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his own productions and other underground electronic music. The label has become an important part of his current work, connecting his DJing, production and long-standing interest in developing music outside mainstream structures.

Joshua has described his approach simply: “Music is an art form. It is the fusion of elements that can convey emotions and make the body move.” That philosophy connects both programmes, with Floating Beats concentrating on deeper and more hypnotic territory while Velvety Elements provides space for warmer, soulful and groove-focused selections.

DJ Joshua opens Floating Beats 439 with Rui Da Silva and Missing Beats before Jorge Caiado's Mad Chords introduces a warmer Deep House passage. Mancini's Jijijaja in the Cab Drivers remix then tightens the rhythm with Deep Tech House, while Halo Varga and Proudly People restore the more direct club pulse of Tech House.

Sasha's remix of Bushwacka!'s Healer gives the middle of the session its first Melodic House and Techno turn before Collective Machine pushes the groove back towards Tech House. Devv brings another deeper, stripped-back section with Reverie, while Gorge and La Fleur add a more melodic and expansive character through Alaris and Tears.

Marko Nastic's Solar Apex 1979 returns the programme to tighter Tech House pressure before Ray Okpara closes Floating Beats 439 with the Drastic Duo Inside Bass Remix of Mescalin. Across the eleven tracks, Joshua balances groove-led Tech House with deeper material and a strong melodic middle section rather than locking the session into one narrow style.

Velvety Elements 012 begins in a markedly warmer direction as Vick Lavender, Jay Newman and Chris Stussy establish a sustained Deep House flow. Jorge Caiado continues that mood with About Love, while Josh Butler's remix of Audiojack's Public Disorder and Col Lawton's Bring It keep the set focused on supple low-end movement and understated club energy.

DJ Sneak shifts the balance towards House Music with Stars, followed by Hideo Kobayashi's Kaze, giving the middle of the session a more direct and classic house feel. Future Kings of House SA and Jasev with Nnatn then bring the selection back into deeper territory, restoring the warmer, more spacious character established at the beginning.

Franck Roger and Paul B close Velvety Elements 012 with Your Love on House Afrika, finishing the second programme on a soulful House groove. Together, the two shows highlight the contrast within DJ Joshua's output, with Floating Beats leaning towards Tech House, Deep Tech House and melodic club music while Velvety Elements remains rooted in Deep House and House.
